    Everyday is vacation...In my mind.

31 pages of this. Kind of ridiculous. Diarrhea of the internet keyboard.

Mocked up my better passenger fender and better hood. My old hood had rust holes in it and had been used to roll jacks around on or was used to test jackhammers on or something and the fender was probably rolled on or driven into at some point. On the new hood the stiffener joints next to the cowl were welded together but now were too small to fit around the cowl, so I cut them and re welded them so that they did.

When I last had this together the fenders pointed up at the sides so it looked like it was flying away. I want them flat, so I will have to modify them to be right. Its because when I welded the body together almost a decade ago I did a stupid job. I also didnt put the grill mounts in the right spot then and the hood did not stick out over the grill an inch or so. Those 2 things made me insane. Thats what finally did it. I swear.! I will not make those same mistakes again. I am also patching the holes I cut in the inner fenders that I needed to make room for the headers that i no longer am using.

The grill is the old paint. It has little gloss left and its only been a couple years since I painted it with the old Imron.

Under the green paint on these better body parts is the original paint. Its NOT harvest tan, but some sort of yellow. The original paint for my tub was red of some sort.

    Very cool Chris.

This site decided to quit sending me alerts, so I had some catching up to do.

Looking good! Throw some mud on the uglies and go with it. Kinda like when I was a kid in my '70 with a strategically placed dirt clod over my expired inspection sticker....

Stripped the hood and the fender yesterday. house paint over some car paint over the original yellow. Hit the hood, both fenders the seat mount and the grill with the D/A with 80 grit then 180. Hung the parts in the plastic jeep palace and shot on 2 coats of epoxy primer. I think I really like epoxy primer. If you get runs in it you're SOL, but its very forgiving stuff. 2 coats is enough to easily fill the 180 grit D/A marks and the errant 80 grit ones too. I let it get dry to touch, still curing, and shot on the topcoat.

The top of the hood got 8 coats of paint to cover the holidaze. I criss crossed every one too. The flats of the fenders got loaded up pretty good and will probably be ok. Everywhere that is not in direct sight got just enough paint to cover ok. At this point I have shot on a full gallon of paint without reducer or hardener, so about 1 3/4 gallons approximately. Its ridiculous. I will need to buy more for the windshield and the roll bar.

I have been seriously contemplating that. I don't know how I feel about a different color windshield. The paint on that is good, just the color is off a bit. I may just go get a quart, scuff it and shoot it.

One thing i didnt think about is that i am not really ready to bolt on the fenders or the hood. How am I going to keep them from getting"shop rash"? Cant hang them indefinitely. Maybe I need to get my butt in gear and get the steering column installed, pedals put back in, hydraulic clutch bled, etc. I am slacking.

Hood and fenders have dents I didnt even try and fix. Don't care. 69 year old parts gotta have some scars. Beauty marks, right?

Working on steering column today. I am using what i gather is a 72 to 75 cj5 column. Its rusty and the bearings are gritty, so I will probably have to rebuild it at some point soon. I am reusing the old pieces for the most part. I have had to add a bit for the extra length. The shaft sits on the engine mount, but not bad enough for me to do anything but add a spacer on the column floor support. That should give me the 1/4 clearance off the mount to make it right. Cramped space.

    I love the color!

I noticed you are using socket head cap screws on your exhaust manifolds. Those type of heads can strip out easier than hex head cap screws when trying to pull out rusted bolts. Just sayin'.

    Your doing great work!

I got a whole pallet of those type of cap screws. They are all grade 5 or above. Some have certificates of conformity and are all made in america from the 80's or before. I use them at work and have never stripped one that was bigger than 6-32. Generally the allen wrench rounds off well before the cap screw does.

All that being said, I don't really like them because they are just oxide coated and rust easily. They are great for indoor stuff or work fine if I paint them.

This is the best paint booth I have had since I left that terrible job as a painter for a tool and die manufacturer. Functional paint job. Nothing fancy for sure. I have painted jeeps every time in similar fashion. They get scratched and covered with dirt and mud anyway. It'll look awesome from 10 feet for sure, but I will know the truth...

Actually i built a pergola and put clear corrugated lexan on the underside and use it as a carport for my jeep. This project is under that pergola/kids playhouse with plastic nailed up all around. its very trashy, but can come down any time now that the painting is just about done.
