I'm trying to see what all needs to be replaced in my front axle so that I can order parts. It is a Dana 27 in a 1970 CJ5.
I can't get this gear off the shaft. What do I need to do? Thanks.

Duh!! I guess my next question is what size spindle nut socket do I need for the nut?

what locking hubs did you have on there?

I would start there.Once you know what locking hubs then you can figure out how to correctly disassemble in order to get the hub off of the spindle.

There will be two large nuts on the spindle holding the hub underneath the weird looking gear from your locking hub.

    EDIT:

    http://www.kaiserwillys.com/product/1537/Spindle

the spindle socket appears to be 2 inches and 1/8th, I ordered mine from 4wheel parts.

Hard to tell but, you may have a different type of spindle nut on there. Most have a large hex head spindle nut but, yours may be like the ones used on the Lock O Matic hubs which is a round nut, if you will, held in place by usually 2 or 3 small set screws that go into a washer being it. I'll try to find you a diagram.

Give this a look. I think your spindle nut is labeled A in the diagram. Doesn't look like you have Lock O Matics, from what's left to see in your pictures but, you may have the same type of spindle nut. I'd like to see what hubs you do have.

Yes. It looks like A. And then the regular spindle nut. Looks like I need a spanner wrench. I'll post pics. Just have to load them to photobucket.

Get yourself the spindle nut socket Piffey linked to for the regular hex/spindle nut that is up against the bearing.

Careful with those little set screws. They are hard to see and easy to destroy, if the last guy didn't already do it for you. Make sure you get all the grease out/off of them and the right size allen wrench on 'em.

Ok. Great. Thank you. I was asking about the actual size of the spindle nut because we have a Sumitt Racing here in McDonough. I went down tonight. The closest they had was 2 1/16". I think the nut might be 2 1/8" but I won't be able to tell until I get that ring removed. It was only $7 and I didnt have to wait on having it shipped so maybe it will work. Thanks for the heads up on the Allen head screws. I would have never guessed that.

Probe around in the grease-filled holes in the lock nut. You should find set screws that are stopping the spindle nut from coming off.

So the nut has threaded holes with set screws that go INTO the washer with a tab?

Should be a maximum three set screws, they have a little shoulder on the back that goes into the slots on the washer.

Yea, Chris and the tab rests in a slot on the spindle preventing movement/loosening of the nut.

Those set screws are specific to that application and i suspect they are made of pure unobtanium.

If anyone has a set or two of these retainers pictured above in 47V6's reply#14, I could use some. I have two sets of Lock o matics and only one set of retainers. I have two CJ5s.
Everyone leaves these pieces on the axle when they strip off the locking hubs to sell, and these get scrapped. The automatic feature doesn't work without these special nuts as there are plastic drag-clutches that ride on the outer diameter.
Lots of folks despise the lock o matics, but if they are in good shape, they work well. I love them!

I agree those are the drag nut for lock -o- matic hubs . but are not needed for the newer style hubs you are running . you can get the standard spindle nuts . just remove them set screws first

I had to get out the drill. Those small Allen head set screws seem like a real bad idea.
I'd like to buy a set of drive flanges.
