Having some trouble timing this dang thing and I have finally come to the conclusion that the timing chain may be bad. I've had it after 6 carb fires and am going to pull the timing cover and see what I got. It ran very good at one point last night and then it ran like crap. Will the madness ever end? Hope I can beat the dead line of Nov. 12

Got some timing chain/dizzy drive gear carnage.chainsawguy The timing chain was so loose it almost fell off and the Gear that drives the Dizzy that is on the camshaft is almost worn round on one side. Hope she runs better with new parts. I'll snap some pics when the camera is charged enough.

Alright here is the garbage picture. Now what brands are long lasting and strong? Do I need to replace the distributor drive gear? It is a new Dizzy. Thanks again.

All painting is finished and I guess I'll liner the inside of the tub another day. Caulked the inside of the tub before painting and it turned out better than I thought. Looking for a good intake manifold to replace the Torker and I do plan to use the Jeep on mild trails and as a daily driver. The Carter AFB is alright but I don't know how it will perform off road. Any Suggestions?

I see chips in the distributor drive gear, I would replace without a doubt. This is your engine, you don't want it chewing up your distributor again especially when you are driving.

for the intake manifold, I would wait tell other problems are solved. Get all the other issues figured out first.

All painting is finished except the roll bar. I was pressure washing the Jeep and started pressure washing the inside of the Jeep and.... kinda disintegrated the glove box. Wish I knew it was a fabric or whatever it was. Gotta get some money to finish the engine. The dizzy gear is fine just not the gear on the camshaft.

if you want my advice, (that,s the way i run), better find a brass gear for the dizzy and a metal gear for the cam. i read a lot about brand new dizzy gear that have to hard metal and mash all the theets of the cam gear even is both are brand new. A brass gear on the dizzy is better because this can will get matched to the cam gear and if there any problem this gear will take all the damage leaving the cam gear in good shape.

I had the brass gear for two year, had to replace dizzy last month, both of them were in perfect shape.

While I build up enough money to get my timing parts my dad and I have repainted the roll bar and worked on the seat belt rewind pieces and got them to come out and go back in. Wish I had just rebuilt the original engine in it instead of getting another engine that is probably in worse condition than the one that was in it. I have learned my lesson for sure! When this engine goes I am definitely getting a rebuilt engine from a shop.

I pulled the Jeep out of the garage today so my dad could touch up some spots with the paint gun. Took some notes of parts and pieces I need. The rear brakes still catch when they're not locked, the transfer case leaks, dana 30 pours, power steering pump drips, and tub mounts are slit in two. I have begun to work on the OBA system and found some of the things needed for it. There was a free toggle switch on the Jeep dash that went to nothing so this will use that lone switch. Waiting on the timing chain to come in; ships to ups then goes to usps for home delivery. Was delayed 4 days and I should have known. Accidentally pulled the shift lever out of the transmission but I got it back in, fixed the JB welded bell crank, and replaced some cut wires.

Last Friday my dad and I put everything back together on the Jeep and Yesterday went and got a timing chain set and installed it, put on the front clip, and installed the blinkers and lights. We removed the intake and fixed a seal on it then resealed it. The hazards don't work but the blinkers and lights do. Fan works along with the lights on the speedometer. Today I started on the timing and fuel mixture mess and got it to run for a while then it shuts off. Not sure if it runs out of fuel in the bowl or if its the timing. Got timing set at 5 or 6 degrees tdc. The engine will run without choke and runs strong but cuts off. The water pump is leaking now though....

Got the Jeep barely running and driving. It has excellent brakes though. Going to get a timing light and try to get it fixed right. Can't get it to stay running long again. Moved all the wires back on the distributor cap counter clock wise one and set #3 plug as my new #1.

Edit: Just got back from the Jeep's maiden voyage and there was a clack from the drive shaft or the rear brake. Found a throttle cable in my mower junk and made a choke. Water pump stopped leaking and got the leak on p/s pump fixed.

After I gassed the Jeep up and Rolled it out of the drive way I tried to engage the starter and I got a rrrrrnnn! Dang! 30 minutes later of nothing I decided to throw it in reverse and pop the clutch going down our steepish driveway and it started but died then did it again and ended in the street. So pulled it up the hill and took off the starter and it is pretty clean inside. I'm just gonna clean it and go from there.
Edit: Starter is shorting out somewhere and I can't locate where. Think I'll just buy another one from my flaps.
Edit again: Happy New Years and I got the starter to work for now. Not sure what I did to it.

Your build makes me miss the '80 renegade I had many years ago. It was a blast to drive. Here it is in a scanned in pic that is from about 1990, parked next to my 71 when it was white. Wish I still had the 80 but I couldn't afford to keep them both.

Just got the starter back on and the York 210 came today. Tested the clutch and it worked. When I go to add oil can I just add it from the suction side?
Now before doing anything else I need to replace some bearing and seals on the Dana 30. Any suggestions on good part brands/ways to get it apart? Thanks [IMG]

So I got to thinking about trying to make a bracket for the York instead of buying one. I found a nice steel plate I was going to put on winch on for my fourwheeler but I thought this was a better use of it. The holes are already drilled out so I guess it was meant to be with the York. I went digging in my misc mower junk and found a piece that connects the deck to the frame in the shape of a triangle and I started hammering out the sides and the pegs sticking out. This picture game me an idea so If this don't work I'll go get some brackets.

Here's mine. Still need to straighten it out.

Okay, took all day almost,, started at 8 AM and finished at about 3:40 pm. Better than spending money for a bracket IMO. Measure 3 times cut once for me on this. Plans changed from how I was going to mount it but it still all worked out. I used Mr. CJ6/442's homemade bracket as a model to base mine off of. Think it turned out great.

Jeep looks really good in yellow. I've got a yellow '75 that I bought about 2 years ago and while it was in my driveway it was ridiculous how many people were in love with the yellow jeep. Even parked next to my candy apple '79 that is MUCH nicer condition. Go figure. But I learned yellow is a great color for a jeep!

I still need to get new wiper blades, repair the front axle, replace rod bearings, get some new gauges, and some other misc things like finish the OBA system and more engine work. Glad that you're watching at the progress on her.
