    Just A ?.

    Could you have not just reversed the wires on your old fan?
    Most electric fans actually will rotate each way with a wire reversal.

    It had directional blades, They were meant to push air. When I tried reversing the wires it didn't work well, it would rotate backwards but the air flow was really poor.

    Not fan related...
    I'd take the radiator out and have the large cap radiator neck (4/6 lb cap) replaced with the smaller, more modern neck.
    Then you can run a modern 14/16 pound radiator cap. Higher pressure will help.
    The radiator will hold up just fine.....for the naysayers out there.
    It's what I did, it works, and it's my opinion.
