Here is an Update on my Summit Air Box heater assembly.......it now has vents to the right and left for the floor and legs and two facing towards the cockpit.

In this photo the lever to the right actuates a valve to throttle or close the defrost vent in the center which will be cable controlled.

Air volume to the windshield is good along with the volume to the side and front mounted vents..........have not tried it with heat but should work just fine. Now I can direct heat to where I want it!

The line to the heater comes off the pump housing from the plug that is top center in your photo with this sort of fitting-

The return is to the top of the head, rear passenger side top just above the temp sender. Early stock setup would be to have a valve there to shut off the flow in summertime, later ones had a valve hooked to the heater controls, look here-

Re the noisy heater, the smaller you make the fan, the louder it will be. Fan noise comes from turbulence around the fan blades. The smaller the fan is, the faster it has to spin to deliver a fixed volume of air, and the more turbulence created.

So making the heater fit under the dash comes at a cost - a larger fan requires a larger heater housing.

I'm surprised that no one has tried to adapt a heater and housing from a later CJ, YJ or TJ. Maybe that stuff is expensive in the junk yards, compared to passenger car parts. Certainly there are plenty of them (falling-apart rusty or wrecked) in the pick-a-part yards here.

Thanks H for the info. That will work.

Great tip Tim-I had that setup but I think I sold it a long time ago-that would work well.

The later Jeep stuff just will not fit the pre 69 CJ's.........first off the firewall and floor is shaped differently, and they also requires an outside cowl venting system that comes in over near the glove box area. The later Jeeps also have more room between the dash and firewall. Out at J&W Jeep Wreckers in Roseville, Ca. they have two huge bins with hundreds of late model take out heaters laying in there........I spent a day there once carry heaters back and forth trying to see if any late versions would fit the earlier CJ-5's...........and none would even come close.
