When I installed my HEI I had to advance the timing to something like 40* before TDC. Could this be the elusive problem?

That's one of the possibilities I was getting at in my early posts. Might also consider the emergence brake drum.

I put that advance there so I could time it. ;)

I know #1 is where it should be. Vacuum cannister position doesn't matter as long as the plug wires are in the right order and the rotor is in the right place (it is). Remember, it did this with the Delco too. I doubt it's related to my distributor(s).

Could be brakes dragging, disk or parking. I need to get the parking brake hooked up.

If the brakes are dragging it would show up while coasting in neutral, or with the clutch pushed in.
Dont think dragging brakes would make it sputter or run rough.

Re: V6 Cutting out at cruising speeds?

The mystery, in whole or in part, is that the only time the problem occurs is when it is in 3rd gear and going over 55 mph. At least that's my understanding. As Sparky has said many times already, why doesn't the engine react the same in other gears or parked for that matter while running at the same rpms?

Faster than 55 now with the new cam. I can cruise with relative ease at 55 but I don't have as much power as I should have at that point.

Out of curiosity, what does the exhaust feel like? Both sides hot, not missing?

One solution is not to go over 55.;) It still sounds like an electrical gremlin, but I'm unsure of what it is. I can't wait to hear the final outcome.

Both sides hot. Not missing. Typical Dauntless rough idle.

Breaking in the cam at 2200 RPM the exhaust was HOT.

Same symptom, now it just starts occuring at 60+ MPH. Not sure where exactly. Harder to get it up to that speed to get it to do that. Hard to get it to go that fast. Like I said, 3rd just feels gutless. Never did before.

I got an electric fuel pump at Autozone, then stopped by a fellow Jeeper's place and he gave me one! So, the Autozone one is going back. :)

I'll try to put it in tomorrow nite. I needed a day off from all this. :(

Thanks Tinker, sounds like it could be...

If the fuel pump does not help - what is the RPM that your getting the trouble at? I hate to say this, but a small vac leak will manifest it'self like this as well. Under load the vac in the manifold goes down - it may or may not effect lower gears as the load (and vac) is not the same. I fought with one simular (though not exact) when we swapped the intake, the problem went away.

    Just a thought.

Speaking of vacuum, has the hose going to the brake unit and the unit itself been eliminated as being a problem?
