from what i've gleaned, it's simpler to pull both together, right? i have a T90/small hole.

I pull mine with a cheery picker, lay your windshield down, put an eye bolt in the right rear trans cover hole, hook on with a cherry picker lower the trans/ transfer case down on a rug and drag it out. Works for me. Good Luck.

while it can be done with a floor jack
due to your limited experience . it's awkward to handle with a floor jack
weight of transfer case , will try and tip it over to right
but it can be done . get one of your brothers to help or a friend

The bigger question may be, how hard is it to get it back in?

I don't have a floor jack so I have long bolts that i cut the heads off in place of the mounting bolts to the bellhousing. i slide the Transmission backwards and i run straps under the skid plate with the jeep on oil change ramps. You need about 20 straps but I have them do everything and I always have a 2nd slightly looser and locked as a safety.

    a word of caution . T 90
if you decide to remove transfer case from transmission
wire the main shaft cluster to the cover bolts . or that job will get much bigger

I pulled mine as a unit, but I have an actual transmission jack, so it wasn't hard to do. If you use a floor jack with the trans adapter, make sure you secure it to the jack with a couple of ratchet straps or chains. Remember, it doesn't care how many fingers it breaks. On the install, I'm going to put the trans with bellhousing attached and then bolt on the T case.

broken shift rail, likely water in the case, and oil needs replaced (which can happen when it's in)

I would take the transfer case off. It's not that hard to remove.

Is it a broken shift rail in the transmission or transfer case?

If its the transmission, just pull the top cover and fix.

If its the transfer case, just pull that off and fix.

i was under the impression that they would be easier to pull together. is that incorrect? it's in the transfer case.

Why pull it all when its just one component? The transfer case is light enough to just pull out and lower by hand. Work smarter, not harder.

i thought for some reason i'd heard that it was better to pull as a unit, but i may be wrong. (and often am)

It's killing me~ you're engine doesn't run? have you heard it run? I think I'd want to have my engine running, knowing it's kind of ok, then go to the transmission stuff

It's a matter of opinion as to which is better, especially if one is going to check everything out including the clutch assembly. I prefer to pull it all as a unit. It would be foolish to not check it all out on a Jeep that has set for a period of time and all about it is questionable/unknown.
