I went to the car wash as well. All I want to confess to is...

Don't undercoat an underseat fuel tank.
Don't overfill the underseat tank full before flat towing.
Do check said underseat connections and top bolts for leaks.

I got 50miles home flat towing when I noticed a lot of mud and crud on the jeeps windshield. 75miles home I decided something wasn't right.

The fuel was a solvent to the undercoat and the wind from flat towing with the windshield up coated everything. Car wash did nothing, engine degreaser seems to work. From shift knobs to roll bar and from the windshield back to the seats the tub is undercoated on the wrong side.

Ugh, what a mess. I hate it when you're hit by a chain of everything going perfectly wrong to create a spectacular disaster.

My new to me steering gear arrived. I *thought* I wanted a redhead box but I wasn't spending $300 on a steering gear. Hopefully, this one will do the job. The 3b has been in time out on the trailer since the breakdown. I may go somewhere this weekend for a "redemption" ride. I just hope this isn't an endless cycle of things breaking. :worry:

At least you had a trailer. When I lived in New Hampshire, I drove my 3b 450 miles to my dad’s, flat-towed it to the race, and I made it about 50 feet off the start line before the clutch disc decided it was done. It was a long trip just to replace a clutch. :banghead:

Next Sunday I may go to Mt Choccolocco for a few hours. (East of Birmingham) I'll be in the area for a bike race Saturday.

Well, I shouldn't complain too much then. I did install a new clutch kit and a resurfaced flywheel so that should hold me over for a while.

I'm scared to go so far now. I'm gathering parts for a D20 2.46 conversion with tapered roller bearings because my current D20 is not long for this world.

Mud day cleanup continues. Hopefully this will last for the summer wheeling trips.

I have the front all back together and spinning well. There was a ton of sand in the rear brakes so I now have the driver side all apart and greased. Ready to go back together.

Got the steering gear installed and went for a drive. Steering seems to be more responsive, takes less effort to turn, and not as "loose".

Finally got around to washing the 3b and trailer off. I don't like mud as I used to. Drove to college and took a final exam. Thankfully it didn't break down cause that was an important exam for graduation. Went on a big loop through a few different towns in the sticks; 48 miles of poorly maintained county roads. I'm trying to gain confidence in this thing after last week's failure. When I changed the oil in this I used Shell Rotella T5 10w-40. Well, I noticed it was smoking much more than it used to this past weekend and my lawnmower also turned into a mosquito fogger. Because it's burning oil so much the plug started to foul again but a burst at 4500 rpm seemed to clear that up.......Fhead "magic".

Thursday was my Jeep's 50th. When the serial number label was printed the first "1" from 1971 was closer to "April" than to "971" , so it always gave the illusion of April 1 1971. As long as I have owned it I always thought someone in Toledo pulled an April fools prank while printing serial number labels that day.

The numbers are faded, but you can still see what I mean.

So anyway I have been stripping the paint off of the headers I bought from member Rejeep recently getting them ready for high temp coating. I presented them to the jeep for a birthday present.

It may be a coincidence, but back when I had a powerstroke powered ford, I remember there being a bunch of discussions about rotella causing trucks to smoke more. Check it out and see if there is anything to it?
