i need to tune this thing for elevation.
i took it for a drive today and in 45 minutes was at about 11,300 feet and it started dying and backfiring on me.
    would elevation cause this?
or am i all mixed up again?

Could be. You're at 6500 or 7K feet at home?
That's a lot of altitude. Or not a lot of air, depending on how you look at it.:)

it was running like dookie this morning.
i went through 97 pages with the search on this website this morning.
if i try to use the choke it immediately dies.
i couldnt take my foot off the gas for a second or it would die.
so i jammed a stick on it and fooled around with the idle speed and fuel/air screws until it at least it would keep running.
i had to up the RPM quite a bit.
this is what it sounds like.
    any input /advice?

You might want to recheck the points gap and ignition timing. When was the last time you adjusted the valves? I had a similar problem a while back and the value adjustment resolved most of it.

adjusted the valves maybe 300 miles ago.

    The motor itself sounds good!;)

The RPM fluctuation, is that what you're referring to? Sounds like maybe a vacuum leak.

i thought maybe it was supposed to be idling slower.
but i dont know what it should sound like.

    Yes, the idle is fast.

iy will die if i slow it down much more.
if i pull on the choke it dies.

If it was a vacuum leak, closing the choke would help..

Yeah, go ahead and check for vacuum leaks. What I was saying tho, is if it has a vacuum leak(s) it should run better with the choke partially closed.

if i even think about pulling that choke knob it dies.
ive been googling how to look for vacuum leaks.:)

spray wd40/starter fluid/etc around the carb, vacuum lines, intake, etc while it's running.....if you get a noticeable change in idle you've found the leak
