I've had a bicycle shifter and cable on my CJ for a couple years now, works great. Just gotta remember it's on, if you're using it a cruise control..... But I'm the only one that drives it, and it's never been an issue for me personally.

It was not that on common to have a hand throttle on Jeeps a long time ago. In matter of fact you could get one from the factory.
I use mine a lot to let it warm up in the winter or to let me drive in the mountains when in low range so I do not have to keep my foot on the gas, things like that. If you had some type of PTO equipment they were a must.

Here are some pictures out of some FSM showing there location on different years and models.

Here some pics. of mine. They were pull and twist to lock.

And a picture of how they connected to the carb. linkage.

I have a hand throttle on my CJ5, and I use it on rough tracks because you cannot control the accelerator with foot.
It is also used as a 'cruise control' to go slowly on a road and look calmly at the countryside, or in the army at the ennemies coming. The Jeep works alone like in automatic :p

It was on many cars in the past, cause of accidents because you cannot get rapidly the control of the car in case of problem.
I explained how to use it to my son, accustomed to the Audi automatic systems and this is not easy.
Young people should have a driving lesson with an old car (made specially for lessons) to understand how it works, no 'synchro' on the gearbox, brakes with a preference right of left, or blocking, old tyres....

Thanks for the pics WyoMike...I have an empty (but plugged) dash hole next to my choke and flasher knob on the left of the steering wheel. That is probably the correct location for an OEM hand throttle. Was wondering how/where the hand throttle would connect as opposed to the choke cable which also activates the choke plate - think I see the easy solution in your last pic. I kind of like the simplicity and originality of that location with a pull knob...have to decide if I like that set-up better than a finger/bike shift type throttle on the shift lever.

I like my bicycle brake lever mounted on the shifter. Acts more like a gas pedal than a twist-lock knob can. And much more convenient than reaching elsewhere for that option.

SO I went a little crazy I made a complete shifter assembly that has a built in hand throttle as well as a push/pull switch to control my rear locker.

It uses a high end bicycle brake cable to travel to the carb. I'm still in the building mode so I can't say how it works. But as a Dump truck driver who spends all day pulling up on a control similar to this in the truck I have no doubt I will like it. The main knob is sitting about 1.25" lower then it will when attached to the shift cane. For the photo the assembly is just stuck on a BIC pen.

My '64 Tux has the throttle knob right by the choke knob, as it came from Toledo. I used to use it like a cruise control back in my teens and twenties. I always drove barefoot, and a trip up the highway got the metal floor and gas pedal so hot it burned my foot.

Fascinating topic (I want to add a hand throttle too), but the thread is almost devoid of photos and thus carries little weight. Photos are worth a thousand words. Gentlemen, we have the technology. We have the capability...

Let's see these bicycle controls and levers you all have added. I've got to see how that looks and the whole ergonomics of it all. (y)

OK, Throttle lever mounted to shifter,
it is stiff enough to hold against the return spring.

Also the accelerator linkage is free to move until the throttle lever is moved.

I'll get on that soon as my Willys is on the road LOL. At current work levels I get about 12 hours a week to work on my Jeep

I'm using the same twist lock unit as WY Mike in my 3B but built my own version for the throttle body end as I didn't want any friction in the throttle linkage so I could use a wimpy return spring.

The Premier Power Welder came with a really nice throttle control but I just didn't have the space for it.

That is the 9 pin to the EFI hand held programmer which I usually leave connected. You can change pretty much anything you want on the fuel and timing on the fly.

    Cool.

I figured it was either that or you needed to get a cell phone so you could increase your driving radius! :D

I have no personal pics of it but I have installed the AC throttle kick up for low speed RPM assist.

Did your hand throttle knob hold out against the return spring? Is there a way to keep it from being pulled back in?

That's a cool idea. What do you have to engage it? A switch on the dash? How many rpm jump does it give you at unloaded idle?
