Glove box fix

Having invested in the POS reproduction "glove box" I grabbed a fifty cal ammo can and figured I'd see how much cutting and welding it would take to make one. Come to find out, a fifty cal ammo can is an exact match for a CJ5. My 59 CJ5 has the remnants of the M38's battery box to get in the way, but even that only slowed things down a bit. A bit of jiggling and it just fell in place several self tapping sheet metal screws later and I have a steel glove box.

Also, I used the search function to find and answer about throttle cable routing/attaching, imagine, problems already solved just waiting for me to look them up. Who'da thunk it could be so easy.

 

Do you have any pic's after reading i'm thinking of doing the same.

I just used that aftermarket heavy duty plastic one that the maker is trying to retire on the proceeds of, my original g'box door/lid/cover and a mailbox lock that I adapted to the lid after breaking two (count 'em, two!) of the original types.

Yours will be more weather tight.

 

i used a two dollar plastic trash can from the Dollar store perfect fit too.

 

When I got my '60 the door/lid/cover was there and held closed with bailing wire.
Nothing behind it. I never even thought of the trashcan thing. My thinking outside the box thing has been decreasing the older I get.

 

I started with a plastic repo that did not fit. Cut it down, poprivited back together, and used an old license plate for a bottom.

 

I bought the plastic one a looooong time ago. I didn't remember it being that expensive, but prices have no doubt gone up since then.

I'm not knowing what a mailbox lock is. It sounds like something I should know about.

I'm not nearly so creative. I put a bolt and nut through the inner bracket that then extends through the hole in the lid where the original latch was. Then with a fender washer and a wing nut I was finished. About all I was missing was a little duct tape to make it a real engineering feat. At least the lid doesn't fly open when I'm underway.

 

I purchased a standard size and it worked ok for me. I had to trim around the bolt on the curb side as well as cutting a slot for the door stop. I marked it, drilled the pilot holes and used the provided screws. But I did drag out a 5.56 ammo box today and that looks like it would be a good fit and sturdy as well. If this plastic one does not hold up I will probably do that next.

 

I got one of those plastic ones laying around if anyone wants it. I made a console awhile back and decided to turn the glove box into a stereo.

 

So that's what those are for. I've always wondered what those two little nuts on the glovebox door were for. My Jeep has always had the nuts bit not the bracket. Now I need to look for or make a bracket. Learn something new every day.

It goes all the way back to the firewall & holds a TON of crap.

 

dvw86, also inside the green circle at the bottom connected to the hinge, you will find a flat spring steel piece that is to maintain pressure on the door when closed for anti-rattle and also gives a spring open effect when you open it. Don't know how many originals are still out there but I do still have it on my Tux.

 

Anyone have a source for the rubber bumpers at the top corners?

Those big square multi-mailbox thing they are putting in all the new housing areas for the last 10 or so years instead of walking around and delivering the mail to your door.

Or mailboxes in apartment buildings.

You can get the locks from Ace Hardware or simular.

 

I had the same idea as Rocky with the glove box.
