What can you guys tell me about FreeLock hubs? My newly acquired M38a1 has a pair of these on front and they appear to be frozen. :( I did a google search and found very little, and I did a search here and found even less. They're very similar in appearance to a Selectro, FWIW.

    This just hit me...

All hubs will have "Free" and "Lock" written on them. Usually, the dial (center part that you turn) will have a pointer that will point to one of these words, depending upon which way you turn it. Are you sure that's not what you're seeing?

    A picture would be invaluable.

The hub in question has "ENGAGE" and "DISENGAGE" with arrows written around the outside of the face. "Free-Lock" is written in the middle in a fancy script. Sure looks like a brand name to me as opposed to instructions.

I didn't recognize the name, but after seeing the photo, I have seen those hubs on a Jeep in the junkyard once. Have never seen but just that set before now, never heard of them before I saw the junkyard set.
I wonder if they are some model that were originally sold by someone like Montgomery Ward or Western Auto in years gone by.

I've seen this kind of FreeLock, as well as another (see link below). They do look a lot like Selectros, and the other like older AVM's. I would bet that if you disassemble them and take them into a good local 4WD parts house, you will find that one of the Selectro service kits fits them. I've found this to be true with the Sears Roebuck hubs I have on my CJ3A, as well as the IH ones on our CJ6. Here's a link to pix of the other kind of FreeLock:

ROTFLMAO! I am so glad this didn't turn out to be true. That'd be kinda like trying to find some "On Off" light switches.

It didn't really sound stupid, but it would have made Don look pretty stupid if it turned out to be right. Now if I had said it, it would have probably sounded pretty normal for me.

:) Sorry about that!!!! We're just never sure who we're dealing with when we get a new member.

Have you heard the one about the folks who drove their new boat over to the marina and complained that it was very slow and wouldn't perform at all. After checking all the obvious, the marina owner had one of his guys dive under the boat to check that the prop was tight. The guy came up spitting out water and dying laughing... Turns out, the new owners were not aware that you were suppose to take the boat off the trailer and leave it attached to the truck!

Not 100% sure if it's true or not, but it's funny either way!!!

Herm Tilford told me to dissassemble these and have the parts glass beaded, and they would work like new upon reassembly. Whaddya guys think?

Herms a straight shooter...if you like the hubs go for it. OTOH new hubs aren't that pricey either.
