My 1960 Cj5 brakes are shot, and I am wondering what kind of brakes to purchase to restore them. I am restoring the CJ5 but not to it's original state.

    Hi Arne -

I moved your thread here beacause the restoration forum is for strict stock restoration subjects. This is a more appropriate forum.

Lots of folks upgrade to 11" drums, some convert to disks - all depends on your money/time/mechnical aptitude. Try doing a search here for brakes and I'm sure you'll get tons of info.

    Arne-
do a search on 'brake upgrade'. If you don't have the 11" brakes on it yet, now would be the perfect time!

    Edit: you beat me Bob!

Hi Arne - the 11" drum upgrade is easy and cheap. Everything you need can be bought from your local parts store except the 11" backing plates. There's an article on the tech pages of Early CJ-5: http://www.earlycj5.com/tech/brakes/11InchSwap/11_swap.shtml
This article says '72-76 Jeep, but I think it should read '72-75; I believe the '76 CJ had disk front brakes, and you need to find a Jeep with 11x2" brakes on all four wheels.

You can also use the brakes off of a '65-73 Jeep Wagoneer or truck. You'll need to use the correct drums and hardware for a Wagoneer, but the backing plates will bolt on just like the CJ backing plates. Postal Jeeps are another possible donor vehicle.

If you want to buy a kit, try R&P in Oregon: http://www.r-p4wd.com/site/product_pages/randp12.htm
You can use two "front" kits if you don't need a cable-operated emergency brake.
