Ok, I'm new to jeeps and still trying to figure how it all works. Yesterday I made my first trip to a jeep salvage yard near Sacramento, Wow was that lots of fun!
(no I did not buy anything....yet!)

My main purpose was to take pic's of specific jeeps to help me figure out how to properly restore mine. While there I took the following pic, and am wondering what the lever arm on the axle (with bumper) does/for/do as the later jeeps don't have it. My jeep does.

    Thanks for the Help!

P.S. My manual wasn't informative at all, the picture breakout showed it, but had no description of it.

I agree, but what is confusing to me is that the distance from the bumpstop at the end of the arm is much less than the distance from the axle to the bumpstop on the frame. Maybe I'm trying to make it too complicated, But why have 2 bumpstops with different travel distances? Also it's only on the Front Right side? I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here and it will click soon.

    Thanks!

I think it was put on the v6 models only to keep the chunk out of the oil pan. I have never seen an original 4 cylinder model with this on it. I could be wrong but thats what I really think its for.

Yep, I've got it too, and it came from a '66 w/ V6. Thanks for the pic because I too didn't know what it was for.

Almost looks like a stop to keep torque from wrapping the leaf springs up under high load conditions. Kinda like a pinion snubber on the old Mopar muscle cars. Kinda works on the same principle as traction bars, except it doesn't decrease the ground clearance.

Isn't it for keeping the oil filter from meeting the pumpkin?

I believe someone else told me the same thing about being a torque arm. Like you say, the bumpstop on the axle would hit long before the arm in the picture would.

And yea, my driveshaft hits the starter too.

Ok, so here's the scenario as I see it, when the right front wheel comes up into the wheel well:

    1. After about 1.5 inches of travel the "torque arm" bumpstop hits the bracket.
    2. As the axle continues up, the "arm" causes the front differential to rotate downward or counterclockwise when viewed from outside the vehicle right front.
    3. After about another 3-4 inches of the travel the axle hits the bumpstop on the main frame stopping further upward travel.
    4. At this point the differential has also stoppped rotating. And hopefully has prevented the driveshaft from smacking something.

Do I have it right now??

    Thanks alot for the input!

Brian mine hits the arm bumper long before the bumpstop on the axle.
