I have a '56 CJ5. I restored it completely recently but still have the original drum brakes all around with the single reservoir master cylinder. I want to put in disc brakes up front at the very least with a dual reservoir MC. What Im not sure of is it possible to put in a power booster in an early CJ5? I really hate my current braking power. If so, what kind? Aso, would disc brakes without a power booster be such a vast improvement over my drums that I wouldn't need the booster? Thanks in advance!

There was an original option of a "remote" vacuum booster in Early Jeeps, if you could find one. Would still be a single reservoir however.

If you still have the stock 9" brakes an upgrade to 11" drums or discs will make a huge difference without the power booster.

Thanks guys. I think I will just stick with the disc upgrade up front. Kits for my Dana 25 are readily available but not so much for my rear Dana 44. For brake figment purposes, is there a difference between my early Dana 44 and a more modern Dana 44? I would think I could install discs from a more recent 44 unless there is a fit issue.

If you can find a dual mc from a newer cj that helps too as far as safety. I put a power booster and mc on the firewall and I'm taking it back off to go back to stock. i have 11" drums front and 10 rear and it stops much better with the stock setup.

On my 62 CJ5 I installed a pedal assembly out of a 95 Isuzu (Rodeo or Trooper...) from the junk yard. Grabbed the whole pedal assembly, and the clutch slave cylinder along with the lines and the porportion valve.

Installed it all on my CJ and the change was night and day different. I could lock up the tires if needed, the clutch works flawless, etc. I had to move one grill support rod over to clear, and made a 1/4" thick piece of metal for the pedals to mount to on the firewall. The pedals arms were long enough to heat n' bend to get the pedal pads over to where the stock pedals originally sat.

Just put a lift and 33's on it, and I gotta say, the brakes are still more than adequate to stop this thing. Was way cheaper than converting to larger drums or discs, but did require a bit of fab work on my part.

There are lots of differences in 44's. Flange offset, housing ends, etc. can and are different. Might contact R&P at http://rp4wd.com/?page_id=31
or call them directly at 503-557-8911. If you scroll down they have a kit to fit CJ 44's up to '75.

11 inch drums all around with a dual MC should be a huge upgrade.

Front disc even better, I know some members run front and rear disc.

    Don't forget the proportion valve!
