Is 12v ok. Thought it was like 9v to the coil. But I think you are on to something.
    I'll try it this afternoon.

depends on the coil. Some have internal resistance so you don't need the ballast resister.

This is just a shot but easy and quick to do. Pull the Venturi cluster and spray carb cleaner down through the idle circuit. I've seen many 2Gs have dirty idle circuits even after dipping. Mine had this problem after the last rebuild. It would run at 1K but once the butterfly shut it would idle poorly or die. While doing it open the butterfly and ensure you get a good spray through the idle port. It will at least rule out a dirty idle circuit.

Coil shouldn't keep it from idling. That's when they have the least load. If it were at higher rpm then I could see it.
I agree with cleaning out the idle circuit. Try that. If that doesn't make a change then I still say vacuum leak or carb issue.

Here is a update. I replaced the throttle body and now it idles great. The new problem is that I have a dead spot(bog) just off idle. I has set the dwell, timing and adjusted the idle screws. All is good but I had to screw the idle screw out 4 whole turns to get it to run.

What do you have the throttle screw ( the one that is in the linkage to set how far open the throttle plate is at idle) set to?
And does yours have the anti-dieseling solenoid with the electrical connection on it? That thing can cause the idle to be wrong if it goes bad.

If you have to run it that rich still sounds like a vacuum leak.

Just asking, is this the really 2g (manual choke) or the 2gc (with auto choke)?
