hoping some of you more experienced jeepers out there can give me some help here. I have a 69 CJ5 with the Dauntless 225 in the midst of a full restoration. I have everything torn down the frame and drivetrain and would like to drive it out in my driveway so I can wash everything down. The problem is that I already ripped out my wiring harness (such as it was) and need to just jumper up the minimum to get the engine running. I have the wiring diagram. Here is what I wired up:
    - battery negative terminal to the block
    - battery positive to one side of the ballast resistor
    - Other side of ballast resistor to the coil positive
    - Coil negative to the distributor

Question, what else do i need (starter) to fire her up?

    thanks for your help!

I would run the positive battery cable to the starter as per normal and from there run the wire to the ballast resistor. Maybe just wire a toggle switch to be able to turn it off if you do not want to pull the wire for that. A jump from the battery terminal on the starter to the solenoid terminal should then get it started.

You could run a wire from the starter resistor by-pass terminal to the + side of the coil or just run a temporary jumper from the battery + which is what i generally do.

Duffer has the best solution and the simplest temp wiring arrangement.

Found a nice set up in Jegs. Toggle switch and push button mounted on a panel all for simple start. I,m wiring under the hood using a trailer disconnect plug. It would be a simple emergency start if I lost my key or if my regular wiring burnt out or something. When not using, I would store it in the jeep somewhere. Simple set up while your rewiring.

just jump the solenoid on the starter with and old screw driver. thats all more you need.
    -pos. wire to coil
    -neg. to ground
    -pos. to starter solenoid
    -screwdriver to jump solenoid

OK guys, i am apparently even dumber than I thought (and that is saying something). There are 3 lugs on the starter solonoid - the positive (battery is connected here), and one of the other terminals has a wire going to the ballast resister, then the coil. There is a third but it has nothing attached (nor did it when everything was connected and running). The starter itself has one long lug sticking out but nothing is connected to it.

So, when GeoffreyL says "screwdriver to jump solenoid", where do i jump across?
Also, duffer says: " A jump from the battery terminal on the starter to the solenoid terminal should then get it started" what exactly do i jump? I tried the lug on the starter to all three of the lugs on the solenoid, and nothing happened.

the battery is good (fully charged), the negative is connected to the block
I am obviously missing something obvious - please help this old newbie.
    thanks!

also, what doe the ballast resister do? can I connect the coil straight to the positive battery?

the ballast resistor drops the voltage going to the coil. IIRC they only like about 7volts. You can run without it temporarily, but it will burn up your coil and/or points.

here is a proper diagram for a 4-post solenoid:

The terminal closest to the block is the S or start terminal. If you have jumper wire with alligator clips on both ends, connect one to the terminal, use the other end to touch the positive battery terminal to engage the starter. Whole lot easier than trying to get a screwdriver down there. Guess i should have taken a picture of mine back in August when it was all hooked up.

there should be a positive wire running from the solenoid to the starter, if not, then what you need to do, is connect a negative to the block, run a positive wire to the coil (dont leave this wire on when not trying to start the engine or you will burn your points. and run a positive wire connected to a big screwdriver and then touch the screwdriver to the starter itself where it doesnt have a wire (where the positive should be) and it should start or try to kick over.

The solenoid is mounted on the starter.

Delco Solenoid, S or Start terminal, inside, closest to the block.
