I tore the gas cap off my jeep on the Rubicon and it is toast. Does anyone sell the black oem sytle replacement locally at a store(i live near Sacrametno CA) or do I have to pay $30 to order from Walcks or other internet shop? Outrageous price for a cap but I want the black original. I also wish the cap would really keep the gas from leaking out on a side slope but if that is they were designed then ok. I have a 67 cj with 225 v6.

RockAuto shows a Stant 31625 and a Gates 10625. These are both chrome, but both should be available through any parts store. However, they list the diameter as 2 7/8" (1 7/8" by 7/8" shallow cam, whatever that means) which seems too small to me. If that's the neck diameter, it may be ok. I kinda think that's wrong.

The only black cap is an Omix-Ada 177263, which is likely unavailable locally.

Personally, I'd go with the Stant if you can locate the right number. You can go to the Stant site, and they have a deailed drawing of the part they say is correct.

They are all vented, so they are going to leak. Some leak more than others. There is a labyrinth in the cap that slows down the fuel (basically stops slosh out); you can plug it and make a sealed cap. But then you need somehow to provide another path to vent the tank.

If you did not know, Omix-Ada/Rugged Ridge has a drop-ship sales paradigm that makes small, single parts very expensive. The Jeep retailers do not stock these parts - instead, they use Omix's shipping tables and have Omix drop-ship the parts to the customer. The only seller that actually stocks the items (that I know of) and avoids the Omix drop-ship paradigm is Oconnee Off-Road. Their prices include shipping.

Tim, Thank you. Years ago I bought one of the silver caps just to get a new seal for my original black cap. I still have it but now it does not have a seal in it. I prefer the black since it is original style. Thank you very much for the information and I may have to bite the bullet on coast for the black style. I hope I did not damage the tank neck and the new one will fit correctly.
