So I got my 11 inch brake kit for the front axle on my 68 cj5. I was just wondering how to minimize my exposure to the asbestos both in the new shoes and the dust from the old ones as I remove and replace them.

I remember about 20 years ago an auto shop teacher talking about cracking the old drum from the hub and using hot soapy water to wet down the inside of the drum while it's still on the hub and capturing and the asbestos dust/mud in an oil pan. Then taking the contaminated water to a waste disposal center. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

You might want to check. They may not be made from 'Asbestos' any more.

Wear a dust mask and rubber/surgical gloves and wet the old brakes down with water. It's the dust that is unsafe. The small amount you will generate is not a disposal issue. You can capture the dust and water in a pan like you mentioned then pour the mix in the toilet. New brakes do not use asbestos in them or the amount is so small it's really not a problem.
