What exactly is the differance? Can you run a oddfire distrib on a even fire engine? For example, a 225 distrib, on a 231 evenfire engine? And are the oil pans interchangable?

Distributor , technically no, the evenfire HEI distributor can be modified to fit an oddfire but not the other way around. The oil pans are interchangeable so long as they have the same bolt count, the oddfires and the earlier even fires shared a 14 bolt oil pan that was later changed to a 20 bolt pan.

My 231 has 20 bolt.... this cj5 frame I got is supposed to have a 231... but with an auto, some folks say it must have a commando powerplant. Which would be 14 bolt 225? Unless it does have a 231, that was swapped in, using a commando tranny, then I might be able to use the oil pan. I guess ill wait till Ig et ti home to ask more questions.

Casting numbers available in the static section (see front page) should help you identify whether or not your motor is odd or even.

easy check is the distrubitor, 3 lobes is odd-fire and 6 lobes is even fire.
