I think I might be missing part of my timing marks or something? Does this look right?

that is correct the left face is 5 advance and the right face of the tab is TDC when aligned with the V notched in the pully

Okay - how do I know where 5* BTDC is? Do I just estimate based on the width of the timing pointer?

"...the left face is 5 advance and the right face of the tab is TDC when aligned with the V notched in the pully"

"BTDC" is the same as "advanced."

Feel lucky you even have the pointer Timmy. Also on the dist there are 2 adjustments....one where it goes to the block and one directly under the dist itself......

May be helpful to mention to check the lobes that open the points as well.....DAHIK

I'm ashamed I didn't know that... I thought "advanced" would be the opposite of "behind" top dead center. Learn something new every day.

Okay - from what I saw last night, it's pretty close to 5* BTDC, just a little past it - maybe at 8 or 10. I did see the upper and lower adjustment points on the dizzy. Is one better/easier to use? Is one for fine tuning and the other for bigger changes? I'm anticipating which one to start with...

Yes for fine tuning, you will know when you are getting close to 5* when you start to hear the F head "stumble" disappear.

Which adjustment for fine tuning - the upper or lower?

Re: valves - remember, I'm just doing the "easy" stuff to improve performance. Valves are a can of worms that I don't want to open. Honestly, it runs pretty good right now. I drove it for about 20 minutes yesterday and I *could* sell it just like it is now (other than moving the fuel pump - it vapor locked twice). I just wanted to see if timing and carb adjustment would be easy improvements.

bdtc = "Before" Top Dead Center.

Not so much for performance Timmy but to make it run right, all the timing adjustments and carb adjustments in the world wont make much a difference if the valves are not set right. Most times with the F head they are set too tight.

So that is what the timing marker looks like!
    Mine was totally gone!
I made a new one from a coat-hanger with the tip of the stinger placed at the notch in the pulley when the engine was off and in the just opening the points position. (Done when it still had points. Now running a Pertronix unit in there)

Got the timing set at 5* BTDC. Smoothed it out a good bit. It was initially set around 10* after TDC.

I had hoped this would allow me to run the fuel/air mix screw out a little more on the carb, but no dice. It still has to be all the way in to keep it from spitting fuel out the tail pipe.
