I thought a 10" brake set was a direct bolt-on replacement for the 9" brakes? I started my swap tonight and the top two holes in the backing plate don't match up with the two top holes in the spindle/knuckle? I've swapped from 10" to 11" before (different Jeep) and it went off without a hitch. Am I missing something here?

You must be using backing plates from a flanged axle rear Dana 44. They do have 2 bolts that don't line up. The center hole is smaller as well. You can use them, but have to drill the two holes and if using in the rear the center hole must be opened up to allow the bearing and seal to pass through (if using on a tapered axle).

That explains it. They do look like they came from a rear axle bc I see no indication of a hub imprint on the drum...

    Dang it.

Why not get another set of 11 inchers?
Better stopping power, and parts are cheaper & easier to find.

This isn't a long-term Jeep for me - I'm just trying to improve the braking a little in order to sell it with some semblance of decent brakes.

I cleaned, adjusted, and bled the 9"ers and they do okay now.

If I was going to keep it, I would definitely go to 11's. That was probably the single best modification I did to my last Jeep.
