Got the 66 CJ-5 out on the road. the only issue I am having is when I depress the clutch I am getting a ticking noise. It only comes about with the clutch depressed. When I took the jeep apart I had all the seals and gaskets replaced in the tranny. It seems to change gears fine but with a very small amount of grinding when initially trying to get in gear. The grinding is short in duration and faint to the ears. Any ideas on the cause for the ticking sound???

I would first be sure that you have the clutch adjusted per the FSM. If you have too much slop in the linkage, the clutch will not disengage completely and give the grinding symptom you describe. The ticking noise you describe could be a worn or loose throwout bearing or a missing or out-of-adjustment finger on the pressure plate. Worth pulling the inspection cover on the flywheel for a looksee!

[Edit] A tiny amount of grinding when tryng to put the tranny into first gear when stopped is common, but not normal. Remember, the tranny has a non-synchro 1st gear, so those spinning gears/shafts to object to being forced to mesh when spinning. Putting the tranny into 2nd or 3rd before shifting into 1st when at a stop works well. Also, stopping the Jeep while in gear and then shifting down to 1st helps.

I should have stated this in my first thread. The tiny grinding noise happens when I am shifting to 2nd and 3rd while driving... It is very small and short in duration.

I have something similiar on a T90 that only has 150 miles on it. I notice that if I take my time going from 2nd to 3rd, the synchro has a chance to work. If I "speed shift", I get the grind too, but like you said, not bad. Try deliberately slowing your shift motion down a bit and see if this helps.

That cold wave hit Yuma yet? It's a blustery 37* in Phoenix...

This grinding is only in relation to depressing and releasing the clutch... Not too cold here yet this morning was 43 degrees...

You might also check for wear on the rods...
