I wanted to run this question past everyone before I go to napa to find these. I noticed the other day that the PO installed new u-joints on the front drive shaft but he never installed the zerts into the u-joint. The threaded hole is all that is there. Obviously these have never been greased. I was going to pick up a couple a zerts so I could try to get some grease into these u-joints. I may have to replace the u-joints.
Does anyone know what size zert I need (thead size). The u-joints are the smaller ones used with the d27a/d18 V6 set-up. Is there one size?

They should be able to look them up and get you the right ones. You may want to take the u-joints back out and take them apart to clean them before you push the dirt that has no doubt found it's way into the holes farther into the u-joint. Also, not trying to be a smart-a$$ here but they're called zerks, they're named after the guy that invented them, Oscar Zerk.

Oscar Zerk.....Learn something everyday. Good point on taking them out and cleaning them. As far as looking them up...not sure where...maybe a google search....I will try that.

Napa will be able to get the right ones for you, they'll look up the u-joint used in that application and should be able to get you the right zerks. There's only a couple of sizes anyway, you can usually tell the difference by looking at them. If nothing else buy a couple of sizes and take the ones you don't use back.

Ace hardware down here in sunny FLA carries them. I'd call up your local hardware stores but not the Orange Monster. I hate that place. I read that they are selling Christmas tress this year so cheaply because they're buying land in Canada and clear cutting. I realize that's how things are done but Home Depot is NOT replanting. Since it's private land and they don't have to replant its very cost effective for them. My rant. Buy your tress from Tree farms!

Mud, perhaps there ain't no fittings because the u-joints are installed backwards?? IIRC, if the zerk fitting is toward the driveshaft, then the zerk may bind against it at articulation. I've admittedly done this, and IMO it's easier to just remove the fitting permanently than to bang out the ujoint and re-install correctly. (Did you get that driveshaft from me? :D)

    Just something to check.

Alan, I've done that. Snapped a zerk right off. The joint was still good, so instead of removing it, I threaded in a cap screw designed to seal off the hole. (I think I had some extras that came with new ball joints) When I need to do a lube, I just remove the cap screw, filler up, and replace. :D
I'll eventually put a new joint in, and in the right direction. But for now, this works for me.

Tim, this might be an option for you to consider.

There's also the other type of zerk, that's practically flush and you use a needle adapter on a grease gun. I've had good luck with those.

I pulled the Drive shaft to get a better look at the u-joints. I found that the u-joints are the wrong ones. They don't fit properly. They are too small. I can't beleive they even work as they do. Going to call NAPA today and I am replacing them. Problem solved.

P.S.- I did find zerks at ACE hardware. Thanks for all your input.
