I tried to install a Davis Unified Ignition distributor, you know a nice HEI rig...but it does not fit at all without grinding away on the engine SO a word to the wise don't bother trying this unit. BUT I re-installed the old distributor with new wires, cap, rotor, condenser, and points. I tuned it so it is spot on to factory specs and it's running well. The exhaust on the passenger side is smoking like crazy though (dual exhaust). I pulled the plugs and rechecked them to be sure they were seated properly and with washers..that's fine. It sounds like all of the cylinders are firing fine and the wires are working fine. I tried the PCV valve thinking that it might not be working properly and replaced it with a new one.

The only thing left that I can think of the the head gasket on the passenger side bank is going out. The smoke looks light in color and could be partially steam (it was dark outside). I picked up a new gasket at NAPA....anyone ever done a head gasket? and how hard was it?

ANy feedback would be great...thanks again....BRIAN

Brian, it's normal to have to grind a bit on the intake manifold corner bolt hole and install a button-head bolt, in order to fit any HEI on the 225.

As for the smoking... was this engine running previously and not smoking? Did the smoking just start suddenly?

I need more info. I cannot help alot without knowing a few things. Was it runnung good brfore this swap. When was the last time it was ran? How does the antifreeze look and what does the oil look like. When you pulled the plugs on that side, what did they look like any signs of oil saturation on the plugs. I can help with this, but need more info to keep you from changing parts needlessly. Good luck

Grind it brother. That's the only way any HEI will fit.

Well here's what else I know so far. The number 2 cylinder is fouling the plug with something wet...looks like it may be oil. We're going to pull the intake manifold and then the passenger side head to see what's happening. I've been able to see into the number 2 cylinder and it looks damp/wet inside so I'm guessing it may be the head gasket.

I'm really hoping the head isn't cracked or worse yet the block isn't cracked.

The CJ was running well prior to the whole HEI ordeal and then I re-installed the original style distributor. I didn't notice any smoking prior to installing the HEI. I did note that while trying to start the HEI the engine misfired the wrong cylinder and the engine may have rotated backwards :( SO hopefully it didn't damage it.

LASTLY if it is the block do any of you guys know a good source for new or quality rebuilt 225 V6's?

well it wasn't smoking....it was steaming!! I pulled the intake manifold off and the passenger side head. The very front cylinder's head gasket had a leak that was oibvious by looking at the gasket. It's getting re-assembled this weekend and that SHOULD fix the problem. Thanks for the help guys.

And I'm in the allied gardens area of SD< CA
