how good is the t-98 tranny

Well got the new cj6 home and it looks to have a t-98 tranny mated to an 18 transfer case and a 231 even fire with a 1/4" spacer behind the bell in between thethat and the tranny. Dose that sound right reverse is also over and up. How good are these not to fimiler with it. Will they take the abuse of the trail? Slow trip home with the 5:38 gears in the axles thats for sure.

 

As good as a T-18. Should be bulletproof behind your motor and any size tire you want. Wish I had that behind my f-head.

 

It is arguably the best transmission that has ever been installed in Jeeps 70 year history. It is the smallest and lightest of the "truck" 4 speeds and also one of the strongest. It is what preceeded the T-18.

 

To cool makes the up grade process that much simpler.

 

How do you know it's a T-98? Very few adapter options exist for the T-98, and it was not offered with a the V6, or ever with any GM engine AFAIK. The T-18 has "T-98" cast in to the top cover, and is sometimes mistaken for the T-98. What do the letters cast into the side of the case say?

 

T-98 1p if I read it right. I'll check for more those numbers are on the drivers side of the tranny about 3/4s of the way up the side. It also has that 1/4"plate between the bell housing and the tranny.

 

The Jeep CJ T-18s (before 1976) use a thin plate adapter between the bell and the transmission. Not 1/4" thick IIRC, but maybe 3/8" or 1/2" thick.

It's possible that it's a T-98 with a home-made adapter of some kind. The only modern T-98 adapter that I know of is for the T-98 used in the M715 military truck, from Novak. The T-98 is a good transmission, but today it's kind of a boat anchor if you're not going to use it in its original application. It had f-head from factory got swapped out at some piont.

 

How do you mean "Slow"?

These vehicles were not meant to be race cars.
You should have been able to run 55 or 60 without any problem.

 

With almost no brakes that was not an option to even try. Damn near ran through the garage door on the way down the driveway. Thank God the engine stalled. Appears to have good compression though.

 

Uh, yeah. Brakes first, then go fast second. Important rules!

 

Brakes? I never use 'em...they only slow you down.

 

Don't spend any money on the original 9" brakes, unless you want a 100% correct restoration. There are much better options for nearly the same amount of money.

 

Appers someone alreay put big ones on the back the front will get disc with axle swap or the bigger ones. This is going to be a driver / trail rig. Tub would be to hard to get back to a good shape for restor. PO's somewhere along in it's life really liked his welder if you get my drift. Will have some stock parts for sale in AK. Fairbanks area at some piont.

 

I have a T98 with a homemade V6 adapter. Bought it from Warloch last winter, haven't had the time or $$$ to install it yet.
I'll have to see if I can get a pic of how the adapter is set up.

 

Mine looks to be just a shim more than an adapter. I'll get a pic.

Was under the old girl and noticed that the bell housing was cut out for the throw out arm to go through or I should say enlarged.hmmm.
