1963 CJ5, 134 F-head motor, 3 speed. Motor and carb went through a rebuild by the previous owner back in 2004 (have receipts from him as proof).

I'm having a problem with the motor randomly dieing and not wanting to restart until it has sat for awhile.

This issue started this past spring when I took the jeep out of winter storage. Throughout winter it was probably run for a few hours once a month plowing snow. I added stabilizor to the fuel before winter.

This spring when I got the jeep out and went to go for a short drive, about a mile down the road the motor quit. I had to let the jeep sit for a minute or two, then it would start, and idle, but when I tried to give it gas it would die. I let the jeep sit for about 20-40 minutes and it would start back up and be fine. This happened in the same spot from the house a few times. It was always about the same distance traveled and usually after sitting a minute it could start and idle but nothing more. Typically it would only happen once then I would not be able to get the issue to occur twice in the same day. Some days it would happen numerous times. One day I got in it and drove 5 miles and back without issue. Later that day it acted up again.

We always keep the sediment bowl clean (weird it is upside-down from what I normally see) and last week we pulled the gas tank and cleaned it out completely with kerosene. We pulled out some flakes of garbage that were large enough to cover the pick up tube and thought we had it fixed when a few test drives showed no more issues.

Today we went to town (5 miles) for a Memorial Day parade and the jeep did fine. After the parade, my dad took it to the gas station down the street from the VFW to get gas. About half way back it died and would not restart at all. About 15-20 minutes of sitting and it started and drove the rest of the way back to the VFW. While discussing if we should take it home or to the next parade that day it died while idling and would not restart. We left it at the VFW for a few hours while I took my M35A2 to the next parade. When we came back for it it still would not start. I flat towed it 3/4 of the way home and for the heck of it tried to start it and it started right up and drove the rest of the way home without an issue. Since getting it home I started the jeep and moved it a few times without issue. I noticed when we were trying to start the jeep at the VFW that there didn't appear to be any movement of the fuel in the glass bowl on the pump. It was only 1/4 full also.

The jeep lights right off when you touch the key and runs great. I just hope to get this frustrating issue resolved soon so I can count on it for rides around town.

I have a friend who rebuilds carburetors with his eyes closed, so I was going to pull the Carter single barrel and take it to him. Before doing so, does anyone have any recommendations on things to check?

I have an electric inline fuel pump I was thinking about using to bypass the mechanical fuel pump the next time the issue happens to see if the fuel pump is the problem, but I don't know how a mechanical fuel pump can work just some times unless it is loosing its prime some how?

Can anyone recommend a quality carb rebuild kit?

Thanks for all suggestions. Below are some pictures from today. The CJ5 has been slowly turning into an M38A1 since I bought it back in 2005. Last summer I restored the M416 trailer behind it. My dad is driving it.

I'm driving my 1967 Kaiser-Jeep M35A2 deuce and a half which is my biggest (13,500 lbs) money pit. I just finished painting it and the M105A2 trailer it tows.

The previous rust you cleaned out is a clue. Sounds like debris plugging the fuel line somewhere intermittently. I'd try thoroughly cleaning out the fuel tank, lines, etc. and see what you find.

Does it look like the inside of the tank had been sealed with something at some point? Not if but, when that stuff starts coming off, it will create the problem you describe by clogging the pick up tube. No way to get that crap out of there because once it starts coming off, it will keep coming off a little at a time. I would not suspect the pump. Next time it happens, pull the line off between the pump and carb and see if it is or isn't getting fuel. Or maybe between the tank and the pump. If the pick up is being blocked, the pump will drain the line between itself and the tank. BTW, nice deuce, and JEEPs.
