I'm to the point of mounting the engine, transmission, and transfer case. Now what I'm trying to do is see what has been done in the past with the rear engine cross member if reusing the stock transmission (long shaft) and transfer case. The Chevy engine swap moves everything towards the passenger side a little bit. I plan to drill new holes for the transmission mount. But what about the transfer case torque mount? There's a ring there where the doughnut rubber thing fits. That'll have to move won't it? I'm using a 4.3 with a T90 and D18. How did you all make this work? Photos of yours would be awesome. Thanks in advance!

Why would you need to place the centerline farther right than stock? I have done several sbc's, which should be identical width wise, and kept the crank centerline in the stock position. The only change to the transmission cross member will be to move it forward or back depending on the engine placement. With a 4.3 it should end up close to where it was using the stock transmission. Just another set of holes in the frame should do it and use the stock D18 mounting.

Duffer & Nickmil - thanks for the quick response. I guess I didn't realize that it could be done. I read on Novak that they are usually offset: "• Frame rail clearance; it is usually exhaust manifolds that dictate location here. Most installations will require the engine to be offset 1" to 1-1/4" towards the passenger side." I figured with exhaust and steering, it would be really tight.

I'm reusing the mounts that were on the 305 that PO had installed at some point in time, and I'm in the last hole. It had been offset towards the passenger side, and the crossmember was moved forward. I don't even want to show you how they rigged the crossmember to stay attached to the frame. I may have to use different mounts then, or be creative. But my alternator is down low, and so I'll have to get new brackets to move it. Here's what I'm working with:

That's an odd place to mount the alternator. I'd mount it on the top to have room for power steering. Here's a picture.

looks like there is a short water pump on his...
my generator would up on the drivers valve cover, with the HI-LO pump beside it in front of the cab heater.
check out a 283 alternator bracket unless you intend to use the factory heater

What about the motor mounts? Any thoughts there on how to move it even more towards the drivers side? Safe to drill a hole and cut the end of the bracket that would bump against the fender?
I'll check out that alternator mount duffer. Thanks!

Measured my motor mounts....looks like the one on the drivers side is actually longer than the one currently on the passenger side. I'm an idiot. I just put them back where the PO had them. Looks like my next step is to order the alternator bracket and swap the motor mounts. Then to make sure that I have clearance for the saginaw manual steering and the exhaust. Brilliant!

The front driveline dictates where the crank centerline is, right? ECJ's have it on the right, and later ones on the left?
