Borg Warner Overdrive

    Hi,
    So I bought a lil lot of jeep stuff,
    2 dana 18s, 2 t90s some springs and stuff

    One of the Dana 18s(1 1/4" shaft) has an overdrive on the back.
    Its a Borg Warner OD adapted to the D-18 by Rancho I think.
    I will attach some pictures.

    My question is..... how do I get this thing off?
    It looks to function just fine, I just cant imagine how short my driveshaft would be with the OD on it.

    I dont want to have the oopsie moment when I pull the wrong thing and a bazillion needle bearings fall from the sky.

    OD or is that a 2 speed over/under?

    It’s a Borg/Warner R-10 OD. My Jeep had one just like it when I bought it.

    The entire OD assembly snap ring’s to the main shaft. You’ll have to disassemble the entire thing to remove the adaptor output shaft then replace it with a stock output shaft to use the transfer case. If you plan to do that, the OD has value, I sold mine on Ebay for around $600 several years ago.
    And you’re rear drive shaft would look a lot like this one.

    The top drive shaft is the one that replaced the one on bottom. The short one was 8” from u-joint center to u-joint center.

    Ha! I just found my copy of the manual with complete operational theory, wiring, trouble shooting, disassembly and reassembly instructions. Seems like I downloaded it from VernCo’s sight but I looked around and can’t find it any more.
    If anyone wants to see it, it’s about 20 pages long and in .jpg format so I’ll have to go through an image hosting site unless someone has a better idea.

    Thats a smaall driveshaft ahhahaha :JEEP:

    Is the output shaft in the d-18 different? I was planning on taking the OD off and then putting a parking brake thingy on it and bolting it up.


    Also, Corveeper if you are willing to zip up the images and email them to me that would be awesome!

    Yes, the Dana 18 stock rear output shaft has been replaced by the adapter shaft that the OD housing is connected too. In order to reuse this transfer case you’ll have to come up with a stock output shaft, bearing housing and yoke/companion flange.

    Do you know if an output shaft out of a 1 1/8" version will work with the 1 1/4" version?

    Just FYI but it only works in 2WD and takes up a lot of drive shaft length. If it were in something with a longer wheel base like a Comando it would be a pretty slick deal but it will just barely even fit in a CJ5.

    Hey Corveeper,
    I just got the OD off and im in the process of taking the output shaft out.
    For the life of me I cant get the output gear off (the little one next to the big one with the gear shifter on it)
    Did you have to do anything special to get it off?
    Im thinking that it might have worn a little bur on it someplace, but before i try to sand it down a little bit I wanted to make sure.

    Any Ideas?
    Im able to pound it until its right at the snap ring groove, but it wont budge beyond that.

    its the gear touching the bearing splitter tool.
    I already took the bearing/snap ring/ washer off, (made myself the hatchet version of the tool)

    so all thats on the shaft right now are the 2 gears.
    I think that the one closest to the front of the t-case/tool should just slide off?
    I tried to use a pretty good amount of force with a piece of wood and a hammer, but it only got to about the snap ring groove before the gear wouldnt budge anymore.

    Just incase anyone else has this issue,
    Turns out the shaft and gear were galled.
    I got the shaft pressed out of the gear and everythings good now.
