6.32 or 4.32 T18

Help please. I have been trading e-mails with the owner of this T18, at first he believed it was a close ratio but now thinks it is a 6.32 first gear. The casting number is T18-1B which I can't match but may be a mangled -1E. Can anyone shed some light on my dilemma from this picture?

That looks like the inside of my 6.32 T18

 

Checking my notes ... Nick says

23 tooth input gear = 4.02:1 1st (close ratio)
17 tooth input gear = 6.32:1 1st (wide ratio)

Count the teeth on the input gear. Casting number won't help.

 

Couldn't you just put it in first gear and turn the input? If it turns 6.3 times for the output to turn once . . . . .

 

looks like the 6.38 to me, but looks can be deceiving...

 

That's a 6.32-1 version from the pic. The input gear is smaller than the synchronizer dog teeth outside diameter. The 4.02-1 version the gear is basically the same diameter as the od of the synchronizer engagement teeth on the input shaft.

 

Thanks. It's located almost 3 hours away and I didn't want to drive there just to find out it is the 4.02 version. I was sure some of you would be familiar enough with this trans to make a good assessment from the picture.
