E-brake Retro

    So, has anyone used the stock e-brake handle to operate the e-brakes on an 11" rear drum upgrade? My handle works great but I'd need new cables and hardware to link up to the e-brakes in my new drums.

    i would take a picture of the set up i have but its not here. i still need the handle and cable to the stock brake cable for the drums. from what i remember both drum cables connected to a piece of metal and the cable from the brake lever attached there as well wich was on a rod with a spring attached to the frame so it would retract itself

    Sounds right. No rush but pics would be cool. Whatever it takes will probably need to be salvaged from some other vehicle I assume.

    So the CJ has an umbrella handle that pulls directly on the cable? There's no lever that amplifies the umbrella handle pull?

    I recall that my old '65 F-100 had the same Bendix 11" x 2" brakes as a CJ, and the umbrella handle in that truck pulled directly on the parking brake cable. The parking brakes were only effective if you stomped hard on the brake pedal, and pulled on the umbrella handle at the same time. I'd expect the same performance from a CJ umbrella handle, unless there were a lever behind the dash that increased the force of the umbrella handle on the cable.

    Might consider retrofitting a later Jeep pedal style park brake lever or a style like used in import cars for some mechanical advantage. Not much leverage with the stock style handle unless you make some levers to get that. Results would be like Timgr said otherwise.

    Thanks all i see your points. I'll start looking for something at the salvage yard. Can't be too complicated. I just want to stay in the same general location and not clutter the floor with a lever type handle.

    I'd have to check part numbers but I'm pretty sure the eBay one is the same as what my Eagle uses. I have a couple of Eagle and a couple of the later style from a Commando which are the same as intermediate CJ. I can dig a couple out and get some up close comparison shots, I know they're pretty darn close. I think one of the biggest differences is that the release handle is part of the assembly on the later ratchet.

    I'm going to be near this sellers business next week and will stop-in to look at it. Not sure pics would help as I need to measure a bit on my 70 and try to imagine what i need to fabricate for mounting. Appears it bolts through the firewall so all I'll need is a bracket to fasten it to the dash or something.

    Speedway sells some for hot rods. A lever arm type between the seats would be effective and easily fabbed.
