    I have recently purchased a 52(?) cj-3a with a buick 255 uder the hood.

the t86 trans is chewed up..

I have a t90 laying around in my garage.

I read that the two are very similar, and even in some situations you could rebuild the t86 using the internals from the t90.

    worth the hassle?

or should I find an adapter for the t90 to the bell housing on the buick
I think novak offers them for like $300ish

If I use the t90 will that V6 chew up that tranny to?

    what other options would work

    I have 2 dana 18's, a t86, and a t90
I am trying to find the cheapest way to fix this without being a cheapskate and having to replace it again if it's not strong enough.

    thanks in advance

is the t-90 from a jeep? if it is and IN good condition, I would use the adaptors from the t-86/225 on the t-90.

If you use the T90 you'll have to put the long mainshaft in it and if you do that you'd prolly want to rebuild it while you were in there. Almost like six of one half a dozen of another isn't it. Of course you may have one that has the longer shaft in it already. That'd be a lucky stroke.

I didn't think the T-86 adapter would work on the T-90. Different bolt spacing:

    T-86 bolt pattern 6.00 x 5.75
    T-90 bolt pattern 6.25 x 4.125

I have a spare T-86 that may be of use to you. It appears clean but may need a go-through. I just bought a junk cooler for PROPER shipping packaging ;)

T-90 does fine behind a V6 - been using them for years... I actually think it's stronger than the T-14 they put behind them stock.

The t90 should be the same bolt pattern as the t 86. I have a t 86 that was behind my t225. It did just fine. I removed it for the big 350 chevy install. Rebuilding it is very simple and inexpensive. As a matter of fact I think I still have a small parts kit laying around somewhere. Syncronizers are only 9 bucks aech.Go ahead and rebuild it, it is a good little transmissin in my books.

The t90 and t86 do have different mounts, the t86 is the same as the t14 (5.75 x 6.00)
    the t90 is (4.12 x 6.25). The t14 is 1st gear syncro'd where the t86 is not.

damn guys, thanks for the quick response!!!

1st the t90 is from a 53 3b, I'm almost positive that is does NOT have the long main shaft.

2nd the adapter from the t86 to the v6 does not fit the t90.

3rd If I found a t90 with the long shaft and had the proper bellhousing adapter, that would be all I needed to make this work?

    Yes to all! --almost ;)

T90 is the most preferred but some members here have no complaints with the other two at all. (well, maybe babyjohn with his imploding T14)

Long shaft T-90's are more difficult to find as the V6 Jeeps only came with T86 and later the T14. (AFAIK)

Here is some basic info paraphrased from an Advanced Adapter guide:

Need T90 with the 1-1/8" 10 spline shaft to match the GM clutch. T90's are found in Utility wagons and pickups with 6 cylinders (Scouts too). T90's are known to come in a variety of input shaft lengths and tooth counts (check and match carefully). Look for trans with a "stickout" length of 9 to 9-1/2" shaft length from face of trans. Both T90 and T86 have 8.0" long cases.

I got lucky and found a guy that was selling a relatively fresh T90+twinstick that was behind his V8 chevy. He was upgrading to a 4-speed. 8)

    Good luck!

Rio - my advice is to look at the kit that comes from Novak. I have been using these for years and is complete. If you can assemble everything, go for it. I would recommend verifying parts yourself or getting them from someone who has done this before. If it’s your first time and you have the money I would get the kit from Novak. You know it’s right, and they will work with you if you have a weird issue.
