Me and my friend were talking a lunch today and he said he had just picked up a isuzu pup dieseled powered. He had gotten all the parts off it he needed to get his luv in shape. He told me he had the motor still in it and it ran fine and did i need it for anything. Then it hit me, a dieseled powered jeep , which put a smile on my face. So Im wondering have any of yall guys ever saw this conversion done or heard of it being done. Im going to go by there this week sometime and take some measurments on the bolt patern and fly wheel. Im going to put my huricane back in for now but I figured the diesiel would make a intresting addtion to phase 2 of my jeep project some time in the next year or two.

    Sure, why not?

I recall a few years ago Jp had a story about two brothers with 2As. One had an Isuzu diesel in it.

That is a pretty good diesel IIRC. A friend of mine had one years ago. I don't think it ever came in a 4wd version so T-case may be a real challenge if not impossible. An old Isuzu/ Luv T-case may do the trick. All speculation here but worth studying further! ;)

I agree, I think a diesel Jeep would be cool. Anything is possible with a little time. Remember the Jeep on ebay with the 6.6 GM Diesel?? Who would have thought that was remotely possible!!!

I hoping it will mate up to the t90 or maybe another jeep tranny Im doing a little online research now. We had 3 2wd luvs on the farm when I was a boy , the bodies rusted off of them but not one was jucked to engine failure. When I was about 12 I would drive one of them around on the farm and you could hold it to the floor and never get it over 45 . It was easy to tell were you had been because the trail of black smoke it left.

    Re: Isuzu diesel

I bet the Isuzu diesel would be a great motor for a jeep. In the 1960's jeep offered an optional diesel. If I remember correctly, it was a Perkins 4 banger. Never did see one in person.

Got to know some guys that had Samurais few years back. some of them were intrested in this engine for swaps. Believe the same came in the chevette thats what they were using with the trans that came with the engine one was an auto one was an T-5 I believe. They loved them becase they weren't heavy like other diesels and they would just chug around all day long on no fuel. Also said they had rev charateristics almost like the VW, meaning it wasn't done for at 2000 rpm.

There was a company working on a VW TDI swap for the Sami crowd awhile back.
Cant recall who it was though. Seems like it was in Sand Sports magazine.
Guess if it snows soon I'll have to look it up. Need to find another write up for Sparky on the drilled drums anyway.
Thought then it would be cool in a Jeep.
Kinda wonder if we put some calls into Novak what kind of response we would get?

I know somone was thinking of a VW TDI conversion for Wranglers recently.

I know the VW Sami/Tracker/Sidekick is commonplace.

Yup petroworks has a setup for it. I have thought about this but But a german diesel or japaneese diesel in my "All American Jeep", All those old timers that get such a kick out of my jeeps around here would shame me so. :( So I looked into putting an Olds Deisel in it even went so far as to finding one (comeplete car, cheapest way to go). But I have a friend that was the service manager at the Olds place in the 70s and absolutly hates them and talked me out of it. Read up on them on the web and there seems to be a fix for just about any of the problems and 3 different sizes two 4.3s and the 5.7. Would be kinda neet if you could make it work ;)

The Olds got a bad rap, for GM not educating the public that they couldn't drive it like gas car. had a '84 chevy FS wagon w/one in college, best car I ever owned. the 5.7 would be neat swap.

The Isuzu diesel engine did come in there 4wd P'up trucks, I test drove one when I bought my P'up back in 86, these are as sturdy of diesel engines as money can by, as reliable as a stone axe. I had a friend of mine that had one in a 2wd that had over 330k on it. Just to let you know the 6.6 liter diesel in the Chevy trucks is not a GM engine it is an Isuzu engine, Detroit diesel is and has been owned by Chrysler since 2000.
Isuzu has built more diesel engines than any company but Mercedes. They were the first auto manufacture in Japan back in 1906. There diesels are more like Cummins than International, they mainly cater to the Industrial base and more specifically to the marine sector. There have been several people I have seen over the years put Isuzu diesels in there jeeps, but I have know idea of what transmission they used. I think it would be a great project and if I was in the market to put a diesel in my Jeep the Isuzu would be my first choice!!!
