I am switching to an electronic ignition on my 225 dauntless and need to know what spark plugs and wires to use. I didn't know if I could use the regular plugs and just gap them wider, or if I need something different. I know I need different wires too, but all of the parts stores need to know the make and model of the car your working on these days, and a 1970 Jeep cj5 won't get it.

Standard plugs work, but I would suggest going to a premium plug. Open the gap to .045 or so. For off the shelf wires get a set of late '75 and up (to when thay changed to DIS) Buick V6 wires.

  3. from what i have read, cause I didn't know either, you use the plugs that fit your heads/engine and gap them wider use the electronic ign wires. I did that and have no problems the plugs are a perfect color an my jeep runs great.

What "electronic ignition" are you using?

Are you going with Pertronix or with HEI? Makes a difference.

If you're going to a CDI ignition, give yourself about .015" more gap on the plug and use a spiral core wire, not a carbon core wire (carbon core wires are fairly common on stock vehicles, they have excellent noise suppression, but they burn out much quicker.

If you are just doing a Pertronix swap, use the same plugs and wires as stock.

The universal spiral core silcone wire kits from Jegs or Summit are a pretty good deal. The last set I got from Summit came with both the standard and HEI ends for the distributor. You'll get an extra wire, since the HEI doe not use a coil wire. A little Slipicone grease or a lot of silicone spray helps assembly of the boots.

If you want to order/get wires that are somewhat of a direct fit order them for a '75 Buick Apollo with the 231 and HEI. Many folks find the pre-made wires to not fit well so purchase ones where they cut to length then put on the terminals themselves.

Yep, with a standard GM HEI put some good wires on it and open the plug gap up to .045" or so.
