trying to get the clutch linkage sorted out on my "new to me" 1974 CJ5. The clutch works OK, but there is no stop on the pedal, which I am just putting on.

However, looking at the linkage beside the bell housing, I notice that there is a spring from the clutch yoke running backward to a hole on the transmission. Does not look like it belongs there. I am thinking that the spring should go forward pulling the clutch yoke toward the front of the vehicle. Can anyone tell me which way it should go??

On mine one end hooks in the lever, the other goes forward and clips on the ball joint shaft on the clutch linkage.

There is usually a small spring on the fork that is internal to the bellhousing that keeps the fork seated on the pivot. Then there is the opposing spring on the outside that is what zila describes.

You may want to look at the parts diagrams at http://oljeep.com/edge_parts_man.html they might shed some light.
