As suggested in other threads, I'm trying to repair a nick on my dana 44 axle shaft using a speedi-sleeve. The nick is on the axle shaft where the inboard oil seal rides. I've filled the nick with JB weld and gently sanded it smooth with emory cloth. My problem is in selecting the correct speedi-sleeve to complete the repair. The speedi sleeve chart lists minimum and maximum shaft diameter for each size sleeve. I can't see where my shaft diameter fits within these tolerances.

The diameter of the shaft was measured at three points with the following results:
    1.509
    1.508
    1.506
The link for the speedi-sleeve catalog with fitment chart is http://www2.vsm.skf.com/en-US/Heavy...vyDuty/2007_027_FULL_BOOK_for_Web_secure.ashx

It appears to me that Stock # 99822 is a close match but my shaft diameter doesn't match the min/max diameters shown on this chart. I need to find a local machine shop (who cares) which may be a challenge. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

JB Weld is pretty hard stuff. Just wondering how long it would last against a neo seal?

Speedi-sleeve are what I would call a interference fit . it will fit very tight as not to leak or spin . you have 99822 is a gold sleeve . you could use 99149 . installing cup that comes with sleeve will only drive sleeve on about a 1 1/2 . if you have to go farther on a shaft . use a piece of PVC pipe correct size ID

The JB weld is simply to fill the void caused by the nick. The speedi-sleeve will cover the spot where i used JB

I think that sleeve would work. You might try to heat the sleeve and cool the shaft immediately before installing. When everything normalizes, the sleeve will never work loose.

Realize JB is simply a fill. You say it is a nick. Well to me a nick is or can be diagonally across the polished surface. A groove is around the shaft. The JB Weld is a filler to stop seepage. The amount of pressure the seal would put against the JB would be minimal. I am by no means telling you not to speedi-sleeve the shaft but if it was mine, I would try just the JB with polishing cloth to smooth the JB.

I think you may be right about the JB working without the sleeve. The nick, I must admit, was caused when I was cutting the bearing retainer with my cut-off saw. (I really really didn't want to admit this) The blade glanced off and cut the axle exactly where the seal rests. So, it isn't a groove. It's about 1/32" wide.1/32" deep and 1/4" long and it filled up nicely with JB and polished down perfect. Without the repair the oil would have seeped right in under the seal lip.
