starter syloniod wiring

    i have a 74 cj-5 need to know what color wiring and which side to hook up the starter sylonoid pulled motor out and forgot to mark them has a 304 trying to eliminate extra wiring put in a one wire distributor and a one or three wire internal regulated alternator how can i hook up my three wire alt to use my factory guages thank

    I've seen solenoid spelled many ways, but "syloniod" is a new one.

    If you've switched to an HEI distributor (assuming so, since you said it's a 1-wire) and a GM si-series 3-wire alternator, you only need to use one of the top posts of the solenoid. For the two large posts, one is power in from the battery, the other is power out to the starter motor. The wire you need to connect is the S post on top and it needs to connect to the start wire coming from your key switch. I don't know what color it is, because I'm using an EZ Wiring harness, not the original, but you should be able to trace it easily back to the main harness coming through the firewall. The wires on the other post originally connected to the distributor to provide 12v at start. They are not needed with your distributor.
