Just picked up a 66 CJ5 and doesn't have a front driveline. Had an early CJ2-3 driveline with it but doesn't fit the u-joint on the transfer case. U-joiont is too small. Local parts houses list a larger u-joint for both ends but the actual differential has the small spicer u-joint. Went to the junk yard and pulled driveshaft from other dauntless equiped CJ5 only to find that it has the small spicers on either end and seems to be two inches too short. Anyone out there had these problems? Need some advice.

Welcome from Pittsburgh, PA! When you get a chance, please fill out your profile with a little bit about yourself and your Jeep. Oh, and we're gonna bug you BIG TIME about pictures. We're big on pictures here!

I'm certainly no expert here, but it sure sounds like the front yoke on your TC is from a 4-cylinder Jeep, while your front differential's yoke is from a Dauntless-equipped Jeep.

For the record, the Dauntless-equipped CJ-5s have the smaller yokes and U-joints and the Hurricane-equipped Jeeps had the larger ones. Sounds ***-backwards, but that is what they had to do to make it all clear. Sounds like you roptions are to swap out either the TC or differential yoke for the one that will match the u-joint on the driveshaft you have. As for the length, you got me there. Not hard to fix, but I'd have to ask why the stocker is too short?

Suggest you ask one of the Dauntless fellas here to measure their drive shaft for you, and go from there.

Did I mention that we like pictures here??? ;)

Replace the D18 front output yoke with one from a D20 that has the same spline count. The D20 front yoke ujoint size will be the same size as the yoke on your D25 or 27.

I did the same thing on my '71 with V6. Used a 4-cyl front driveshaft with the larger joints, IIRC. Now my front and rear driveshafts run the same size ujoint.

Thats a start. Will the larger driveline hit on the bottom of the transmission? Having problems with pictures.

 Whoa, where is this located??

Welcome from Ohio. I've had a similar problem, and swapping the yoke(s) solved the prob. Now I've got the larger yokes & u-joints with no tranny binding.

BTW, I'm jonesing for one of those smaller-type (2.5") ujoint driveshafts. It can't be any more than 23" collapsed length though, and the one's I've got/seen are 24".

I put the larger front driveline in my '71. With the lift, no problems. IIRC, with stock suspension your driveshaft may contact something when the suspension is compressed, seems to me it was the starter housing? My front ds had a mark on it where it hit as it rotated, but nothing ever broke. But then I didn't wheel it too hard until after I got a lift.

Alan - I'll measure my DS next time I'm in the garage. I gotta double lil' yoker that I'll need to replace with the new D30. It does have some marks from contacting the starter. I wheeled mine a bit before the lift. :D :D

    To HIPPO393:
Now that I have two of the drivelines (one with the older bolted tab ends and one with pressed in ends) I will check the length. Looks like I won't be needing them. My driveline measurement is 25"

Thanks for checking. 25" is too long unless that's the extended length.

Ahh, good point Lynn. I haven't had any clearance issues, but then again I "think" my CJ is slightly lifted. (no way to tell since there are no body mounts, just steel spacers welded in from body to frame).

Hippo393: They are both completely extended and don't reach the 25". I can let one of them go. I'll measure the compressed length tonight.

Lynn: Which dive line will I need to get to the new yoke? Like I said it is 25" from center to center on the u-joints.

I can't say for sure, you'll have to search. Look at Jeep products from the 70s. The key is to make sure they have the same spline count, I think 2 different spline counts were in use.

Finally some pictures from Cheyenne. This is the wife's Christmas present. Hopefully the driveline finishes up soon.
