That looks like a relay to me that is not properly connected or burned out and the PO used it as a connection point. Your volt meter at the dash should be marked on the back with - minus (ground) and + (positive or power) that becomes hot with the key on. Are you using the alt/gen indicator light in the speedo cluster?

No that is your high beam indicator. The gen is to the left about 8 o'clock and the oil is to the right side about 3 or 4 o'clock.

I took the alternator to get tested and it was bad. I got a new one, brought it home, hooked it up and it still looks like its not charging... Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the charging system? I really dont know why I can't get anything past 12v.

^ yeah I have the one that is in the jeep and a hand held tester, they both read the same. I just went to napa to have the new alternator tested and it failed the test. Do you guys think I'm shorting the alternator?

For an electric winch you will want huge amounts of juice.

Ok, thank you all! Whent and got the ojgrsoi posted the link for. It fired right up!!! It bolted right up with out any modification. The only thing is that when I hook up the white wire on the pig tails to the relay the engine won't shut off when I turn the jeep off? Should I keep it off?

Mine is wired with the red wire of the pigtail going to the hot post on the starter where the battery cable is connected. The white wire of the pigtail goes to the amp light on the instrument cluster. I have a 6 ga wire from the big post on the back of the alternator directly to the battery. The regulator is built in so you won't need your voltage regulator.
The 6 ga wire is routed from the alternator toward the thermostat housing and then turns down along with the oil sending unit wire. It then runs near the starter and follows the positive cable back up to the battery. I did it this way so the wiring would look a little better. You can kind of see the wires in the before and after photos.
