rewiring 74 cj-5 304

    i just got my body back on my 74 cj-5 rebuilt motor 304 runs great but can anyone tell me how to rewire my engine i put in an hei 1 wire distributor and a internal regulated alternator need to clean up my motor conpartment have gm tool to disconect locking male and femail terminals which ones can i take out of sockets and how to rewire engine conpartment for a nice clean original look thanks

    I had to use the existing wiring diagram and the one that came with my rewiring kit.

    If you don't have the original then try here.

    You can download some aftermarket rewire kit instructions that might also be helpful since they show the most common wire hookups, like GM alternators etc. Of course the colors are different, but the diagrams might help.

    Yep - you can keep the original wiring harness with changes to accommodate your HEI and Delco alternator. Or you can buy one of the hot rod harnesses (Painless, EZ-Wire, etc) and use the scheme that comes with the aftermarket harness. Up to you.

    The HEI is easy. It's a one-wire connect, so you eliminate the coil and distributor from the original diagram, and send the coil hot wire to the new distributor.

    For the Delco alternator, later Jeeps used the Delco alternators, so you can look at a later Jeep diagram and copy the way they connect the alternator. Or look for one of the many discussions of Delco conversion on the net, on web pages or in various forums.
