I'm sure people are tired of this question, but I'm too curious not to ask...
My VIN Plate reads as follows:
    J198658
    21 69(or G9?) 3HG(or 3H6)
    J6F83(8?)H0949311
    8300

I figured out most of the actual VIN but can't find info on the rest of the #'s

Also, what trans, tcase, front and rear axles came on a '76 3spd, V8?
    Thanks in advance!!!

It's all spelled out in the '76 TSM: http://oljeep.com/edge_76_tsm.html

Reading the VIN plate is in section A. The paint codes are also there - G9 is Medium Blue Metallic. You need a parts book for the trim codes.

i looked thru the tables and the charts, but cant find if whether or not 'renegade' packages are defined by the VIN...

does anyone know if they are or not?

Some years the Renegade paint code shows up on the VIN plate. '73 and earlier the Renegade was only delivered in the Renegade colors, so the paint code needs to match. It's not in the VIN though.

Nobody will care if you make a Renegade. If you can get the wheels, a solid back panel, gauges, stripes, V8, color-matched roll bar, black vinyl buckets, back seat, all that stuff, you can make a Renegade. I would tell any potential buyers that it was not delivered as a Renegade...

I know my was Renegade Plum so I figured it was a Renegade. That plus the solid back panel, roll bar, large spring pack, etc. I was looking at my vin today and see that there is a number above it that is meant as a "factory code", it's just below the order number. On mine it's an "87". If you look in the parts book the decals that are associated with the Renegade for that year have "87" in the part number. That makes me wonder if that is an indicator of the Renegade package.

mine is that weird golden eagle color (dark brown metallic) from what i have found under the dash and in the hidden corners... but i m not sure if that was a color choice in 76... if it wasnt, then someone did a REAL good job of painting it... meaning took off all the stuff and shot all the hidden corners...

doesnt really matter, i was only asking for curiosity... THANKS for all the answers though...

its just gonna be a JEEP

tailgate, buckets, aftermarket cage, wheels, tires, and 360

    but it ll be MINE!
