I put the winch to good use the other day. Getting the last stumps out of my yard from Hurricane Charlie. So i get the winch and chain on the stump and start winching, when i had it taunt wit hthe jeep and the jeep actually getting pulled to the stump. I let go of the control to stop the winch and the winch relaxed and let off the tension. So i am guessing the external drum brake is the only brake on it, or something is worn on the inside that will not let it stay taunt. This would kind of freak me out if i had the winch to a tree say in Tellico and the winch would real out instead of anchoring my jeep on the hill. So is the winch got something wrong with it, or the brake actually is used for that, and not just slowing the line down.

    Thanks!!

You just found the problem with that style of winch. It's a design flaw not a problem with your winch. I had one on a Scout years ago and was ultimately the reason why I got rid of it ( the winch, not the Scout). Yup, they rely on the external brake to keep from unspooling. When they get wet they don't work real well. You have to have plenty of tension on them to work correctly. You might look at the linings and make sure they are in good shape also. Nickmil.

We had a demonstration put on by a Warn rep at our club meeting the other night and one of the tips that he told us is to make sure you have enough line spooled out, otherwise the Jeep will pull towards the object, rather than the object to the Jeep. He suggested using a snatch block to legthen the line (gives you 2x the distance) if you can't get a proper distance away. They were demonstrating electric winches, for what it's worth.

What Nickmil said. IIRC there is an adjustment for the brake band under the lever, down at the bottom. You have the cables and the swich console? Is the brake cable adjusted to correct tension?

Thanks guys!!! I didnt hook the cable up to the brake. I did put a new lining on the winch (leather belt around the drum) I just need to get a cable lock to hook it up to the winch arm. I was a bit close to the tree with the jeep, probably about 5-6 feet spooled out to the chain around the tree. I thoguht you got more "pull" when not as much cable was out of the winch. Oh well, i will get the brake hooekd up and see how that holds it.

    Actually Dan...

The opposite is true. The first layer on the drum is the "strongest". As more and more line goes onto the drum, the weaker the winch becomes. If you check out the detailed specs on a winch, it'll list the pulling power for each layer. (it's a leverage thing)
