i was reading through some old posts and i believe lynn said that napa would cross-reference the number (national 473229) but it would be a single lipped seal. am i reading this right?? i'm looking to finally putting on some twin sticks and would like to throw one of these on the back to try and slow down the oil getting out of that area; and i'd rather get it from napa if i could. especially to get the guy who told me that it depended upon which transmission i had, then said i didn't know what was going on...

on a side note... the napa books showed a t15 stock for a 71 cj, along with an automatic?? what's with that misinformation?

I'll bet not 1 in 100 rear leaks on a model 18 is the lip seal. It is almost always the splines, the shims or that damn speedo.

Mine leaked thru the splines until I got creative with it.A little black trv goes along way. I was gonna replace my seal as well until I cleaned everything up and discovered it was the splines

I use the double liped seal. It does work. Also used RTV on splines. Lots of ways to let oil out. Since i was adding a new oil seal anyway i put in the double for cheap insurance. Also check the yoke if it is pitted, then the oil seal still wont help.

Do yourself a favor, and hit a bearing supply house. All you need is to supply the old seal in reasonable condition (so they can measure it or get the part # off of it) and they can cross reference to the double lipped version. BONUS...no annoying parts guys who think they know it all because they have a book in front of them.

As said before, there are a lot of ways for oil to slip out, just be sure to check all of them. Especially check the yoke for smoothness where the seal rides. A rough surface, and NO seal will do it's job correctly.

well, there's rtv in the splines already, and the shim pack has rtv between each shim as well. it's leaking from inside the drum out the back of the speedo unit... soo.

it's just cheap insureance against another leak problem once i get the twin sticks in. guess i'll drop by another napa on the way to northern today. supposedly we've got the worst one around town... you guys know spicer doesn't make u-joints? shocked me to; especially when i had the part number.
