Do I need to prime an oil pump on and already running engine?

    Hi Guys,

I have an F-134 engine that I removed to replace the rear seal. I flipped the engine over on an engine stand, replaced seal and re-installed the oil pan. I did not remove the oil pump. I have had the engine unside down for a few weeks.

When I finally get the engine back in, will I need to prime the oil pump before starting or will it still be primed from when it was previously running?

    Thanks

I don't know the "real" answer to this, but if the engine was upside down it might be a good idea. Packing the pump with vaseline is one way.

If it was me, I'd probably just crank it a few times with the HT coil wire pulled out to kill the ignition. See if the oil pressure builds, before starting.

I would prime it before startup. Most likely the oil has run out of the pump. I'd also pull the spark plugs and crank it over to expel any oil that has accumulated in the cylinders/combustion chambers......

Great advice as usual guys, thanks.

I assume that the best method to pack the pump is just taking the cover off and packing it from there?
Am i correct in my thinking? My service manual is not specific on the method to use to prime the pump.

    Thanks

I just did this a few weeks ago. I could not get the pump to prime by itself. Just fill it with oil on assembly, that should do it.
