I have a 1970 CJ-5 w/ a V-6. The choke will not close all the way. In order to start it I have to dump fuel in the carb. Are the chokes made to close all the way? I disconnected the choke cable ant tried to force the choke shut but it will go all but the last 1/4".

Also where can you get pats for these things I.E. and new Carb. Also I am having a hard time finding a new dash (mine looks like swiss cheese).

Either the threaded rod that the air cleaner attaches to is blocking it (if threaded to far), or the flap needs to be removed and filed on the edges that are rubbing. A $20 rebuild kit from NAPA may go a long way.

By the way, welcome from Kansas!! Take time to fill out your profile and post a picture of your Jeep. You can post in the Wanted to buy section here, and check ebay, etc.

    Welcome 70CJ5 from Charlotte.

Yes that choke (manual) should close all the way. The linkage should adjust to where you can do that. If not, worse comes to worse a new choke cable can be bought at the local parts store. Piece of cake getting a choke cable that does the job right.

As far as the need to continually dump gas down the carb to get 'er started.....there should be a fuel filter in between the fuel pump and the carb. Find a way to make that fuel filter a clear variety. They make clear fuel filters that give you a visual of the volume of gas getting to the carb from the pump. It helps troubleshoot alot.

    Lotsa luck!

Went back out and looked at it last night. The choke is binding where the flap goes through the rod. The flap is rubbing on both sides of the carb like the flap is to big/wide. The carb didn't shrink and the flap didn't grow so this is a wierd to me. The cable and adjustment are are fine I'll try to get pics to show you. Can you get a new carb for these. Me are rebuilding carbs has never turned out good. I can fix the rest of the vehicle but carbs don't like me.

good call patrick re upside down.

re. a new dash... i have been looking for a 69 for 2 months now. closest i have found is a 75 (has the rectangular warning light holes). i have been welding some patches to mine. i have contacted krage, northstar, etc. none...

i did find a decent dash out of a 70 dj left hand postal jeep and took that. unfortunately it doesn't have rolled edges along the top. but i can use the sheet if i need to. krage does carry a 75 panel but it has speaker grills on the left and right sides, ( made in phillipines) no instrument cutouts. about $80 plus shipping.

if you find a good source, let me know.

and welcome from iowa, btw :D

Patrick, I will check this weekend if I get time but that sound like a winner.
As for the dash if I remember I will call Willys tomorrow and see if they sell just the dash. Alot of people make new tubs and complete body kits one of them have to sell the dash by itself.

Might also want to check your accelerator pump to make sure it is squirting fuel. Even if your choke is open, a few good pumps should at least get it to fire off, instead of pouring gas down the throat.

Took the carb apart today. Choke butterfly will not close no matter how you put it in. Carb was nasty on the inside and one of the bolts that bolted it to the intake broke and one of the others was rusted bad. Lots of junk and rust under the carb.

Can you file on the edges? Mine was the same. Sparky and I filed it down very little and it was fine. Same story with the intake bolts on mine too. I got lucky and could get Vise-grips on the broken off stud.

I'll try to file the choke butterfly and the intake bolt is being soaked in PB Blaster for the next few days before attempting to remove it.

Some carbs are designed so that the butterfly does not close all the way, this is how they get air in, instead of having a machined opening.

I checked both of my 2G carbs neither one of them does the choke butterfly close all the way, and after looking a little I believe none are suppose to as neither my weedeaters nor my John Deere riding mower will the choke close all the way. My 2G's close down to about 1/4" and thats all. If your choke closes this far don't mess with filing it or anything it ain't suppose to close any farther.

Zed- It only has the glove box. No other holes. No speaker, No speedo, No nothing. Call Dennis at 800 265 5337. The way I understood it it was for a 70 CJ and had no holes but the glove box. The pic of it on their website (mounted in their tub they sell)showed it that way too.
