Anyone ever put a T-176 behind their Buick V6? Pretty efficint swap? I also have a ribbed SM420 I could swap over. Looking at a couple of options. Own a 70 CJ-5 with factory V6 and looking to replace factory 3 speed.

You should be able to bolt up the T-176 to a GM engine. Look at the Novak site about adapting Ford transmissions to GM engines: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/ford_to_gm.htm

It's a Ford passenger car transmission, adapted to Jeeps, so it shifts like and has ratios like a car 4-speed.

The main problem will be transfer case compatibility. If you ar trying to save money by using a transmission that's already adpated to a transfer case, you will be limited to the D300 and some chain-drive NP cases. You'll need a rear axle with a centered pumpkin.

The SM420, being a GM truck transmission, will shift like a truck and bolt up to the GM bells. You'll need an expensive adapter kit to bolt up to a transfer case.

Lots of info about these transmissions on the Novak site.

No, I want to keep the Spicer 18 and my Warn OD. Just looking at some various options and relieve myself of the 3 speed. I am sure the 3 speed would do anything I would ever want to do with this Jeep, but really wanted a better transmission for some odd reason. When I bought the Jeep, previous owner had already bought a kit from McGruff for swapping in saginaw steering. Had some forethought as well, he included a left bank rear exit manifold too. Just concentrating some effort on a 4 speed.

Lots of good options for the 4 speed swap - you need to decide on why you want the 4 speed and build from there. I put the SM465s and T18s in for the low first gear and to make them bullet proof (in a manner of speaking). Remember, all of them have the 1:1 final drive, so its the shifting and gear ratios that make them worth doing.
