so my willys has always been hard starting from a slumber (vac gauge showed engine was good/normal)...had the ys carb on it and i hated the vac accelerator pump..fired right up with a squirt of starting fluid though..so a good used solex was swapped on it. Now here is my question..she is still hard starting..but will start with a squirt like the ys....i know today fuel can evaporate quickly, and sometimes the solex bowl dries out, but when i look down the throat and pull the throttle, i see a weak stream of fuel come out (think right towards the end of peeing, not at the beginning ) so....is that weak stream normal, and if fuel is coming out the bowl cant be empty correct?...

even though i can see wetness in the manifold below the carb, the plugs appear dry...

There could be fuel in the accelerator pump passage even if the bowl is dry, but not likely. The accelerator pump can be adjusted so that it squirts earlier in the pump lever throw. If the stream is weak or late in the cycle it isn't doing it's job.

Might have some trash in it or may be leaking internally or may just need to be adjusted. The accelerator pump shot should be strong.

Additionally if the bowl is dry after only a short while, then the fuel is likely leaking somewhere. Possibly down the intake manifold or out of the throttle shafts. I'd make sure that carb is clean, the float level is adjusted correctly, and the pump is adjusted.

Mine doesn't hold fuel for maybe a day or two, it seems to me the newer gas definitely evaporates much quicker.

i was able to take a look at it today....filling the bowl vent with a syringe didnt help.....
got it started with a squirt of fluid to check the "spray"
nice spray and runs fine once it starts up
    here is a pic..

when running you get the typical fan/spread of fuel that you shoud (as indicated by the red circle..) when not running..i get a dribble of fuel out of the brass
tube (highlighted in green)..so?..what does that mean..i figured i should see the fan/spread like when it is running...

second..are the solex supposed to be really loud...here is a vid..the whistling as it sucks in air is louder than any other carb i have heard..

My solex wouldn't hold fuel for more than a day or two either and the garage stinks like gas for 2 days after I drive it. Once I pulled my PCV plug in the manifold an hour after driving it and had raw fuel dump out--so I know it's leaking rather badly.

I rebuit it twice (just took it all apart, cleaned everything, put it all together--no new parts or kit or anything). The first time I did it, I just left everything dry. The second time I applied some sealant called "Hylomar" on all the gaskets and mating surfaces (it's a permatex product). After the second rebuild it now holds fuel for at least a week without evaporation. It still stinks a bit when left sitting in the garage.

Mine has a loud intake sound as well, but only when the 'choke'/(enrichment circuit) is turned on. I think that's normal.

I'm not quite sure what is causing your specific problem, but I would vote for a rebuild and try it again.

I don't have anything to add regarding your starting problem, but my solex doesn't hold fuel past a day or two either. It usually takes a good 30 seconds or so of cranking before the engine catches and runs. Once I start it for the first time though, it runs great it runs great until I park it for an extended time again.

Mine also makes a loud sucking sound when the "enrichment circuit" is activated.

Ah, the infamous "Solex starting syndrome."

I ran a Solex for 7-8 years and it was head and shoulders above the worn-out WO it replaced. With that said, it seems to be a common characteristic of the Solex to run dry after sitting for a few days. Mine would crank for ~20 seconds after sitting for 2-3 days or more before firing,
