Is it necessary to have the valve cover breather hooked up to the air filter assembly on the Dauntless? The reason I ask is that one valve cover has the pcv and the there seems to be so little oil in the valve cover that I can't believe it makes that many fumes.

The crankcase needs a clean air intake. The PCV valve connects to engine vacuum. Clean air comes in from the air cleaner, through the crankcase, and out the valve cover.

Makes sense. Could you use a breather that has a filter in it instead of running a/the hose to the air filter assembly?

You need a clean air source like said above. It's common to put a filter style breather on the inlet valve cover. And yes, you need the PVC system.
