I would like to swap in a centered d44 (mid 70's 30 spline unit) into my jeep. I want to change it to 5.38 gears, which I have in an offset d44 that was recently rebuilt.

Will the carriers interchange (I will have to use the later 30 spline spiders)

Will the ring and pinion work in the later housing (with or without the carrier)

I realize I will have to use the coarse spline yoke on the pinion.

    Thanks guys

The ring and pinion gears will work in either housing. If the offset 44 is a tapered axle 10 or 19 spline version then the CASE will not work in the centered housing with 30 spline shafts. 10 and 19 spline side gears can interchange and 27 and 30 spline 44 side gears can interchange. You cannot put 10 or 19 spline side gears in a 30 spline open CASE or vise verse. You can with a Powerlock however.
You must use the CASE that fits the gears you are going to use also. One a Dana 44 2.54 to 3.73-1 gears uses one CASE and 3.92 to 5.38 uses another. So in a nutshell, you need the case that will match the gear ratio and spline count of the the axle shafts you intend on using.

ok, so my ring and pinion will fit, I just need a new carrier for the 30 spline D44 as mine has the higher gear (numerically lower) carrier.

Thanks for the input, very helpful

The carrier is the part the case, ring and pinion, etc. go into. Commonly referred to as a chunk, pumpkin, center section, etc. The CASE is the part the ring gear bolts to that houses the pinion (commonly called spider) gears and side gears. On a Ford 9" the carrier is the whole center part that drops out when unbolted that houses all these things as an example.

    You're more than welcome ;)
