Ah, the old "Solex stumble." I think you'll find, as many others have that th Solex is a cold-blooded beast that is really only happy once the engine is up to full operating temps. I learned to drive with a much more aggressive foot while warming up, powering past the "flat spot" until I could run without the choke and then it would be just fine.

My grandfather, who worked on Jeeps for about 40 years, always said not to use the solex. I was too young that time to ask the right question and get deeper with more questions. I just remember him say that each time i had problems with my YF.
I also heared jeepers say that the solex doesnt allow the right amount of fuel to get to the engine, and by that makes all kind of troubles.
That is all i know about the solex and for me its enough - i wont use it and i will keep adjust, hate and love my YFs. For me the YF is part of the F134 engine,
Maybe i am wrong ... but its only me.

The key benefit to running a Solex is that it isn't a worn-out 50-year-old carburetor. You can rebuild and tune a YF until the cows come home, but every single one that I've ever seen on a Jeep has at least some wear on the throttle shafts where they pass through the base plate and that causes vacuum leaks, difficult starting and erratic idling.

If you are stuck on keeping the YF, you will be way ahead by sending it off to a good carb shop to have it completely redone, including getting the shaft rebushed. I've used these folks before for non-jeep carbs and their work is awesome! http://www.carbshop.ca/

Thanks for the link w3srl. Thing is, is that I' ve just bought the solex..:(...but i agree, the carter seems a more reliable carb when working properly...What you discribedis exactly what went badwith the carter carb..but my questions I've asked still keeps me searching for this fix or correction for the solex..If I continue with this issue, I'll probably will have to send the carter carb for repairs, but as everyone right now,
I'll have to wait after the Holidays....

I have the same issues with my SOLEX carb. Mine did not come with any instructions. I am not sure where to connect the choke cable. The point I think is where to connect it does not do anything if i push/pull it manually. Its on the opposite side of the carb that the throttle connection is on. It starts and will only run for a few seconds before it dies. Thanks for any help.

Well, I finally got it to run as best as I could...I did some tweaking with the accelerator pump adjustment, the Mixture and idle adjustments.. I also checked the timing and dwell angle (42*) or point gap (20) and the timing was off a bit..Place it back to 5*BTDC...After this I took it for a ride and the stumble seem to go away a bit but runs a lot better now! (maybe I need to tweak it a little bit more):)..As I read many of the posting on this carburetor here, YES always check the timing..it makes a lot of difference on your engine and your carb...I hope some of this that I did to my carb will help someone else with similar issues they may have with their carburetor...:p
